“More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope.” - Romans 5:3-4 Last week a story went viral that says a difficult life isn’t worth living. I want to offer a different perspective: The Hard Road Is The Point. There’s a growing lie baked into modern culture that life is supposed to be smooth. Convenient. Perfect. That if things are difficult, something’s gone wrong. That suffering is a malfunction, not a feature. So people spend their lives optimizing for comfort. Avoiding friction and inconvenience. Looking for the shortcut, the hack, the easier path. And they miss the whole point. The beauty of a life well-lived isn’t found despite the struggle - it’s forged inside it. Character doesn’t grow in comfort. It grows under pressure, strain, stress and adversity. Gratitude doesn’t come from ease. It comes from having walked through something hard and making it to the other side. The ancient understanding - the one we’ve traded for comfort - is that suffering carries meaning. That the valley isn’t a detour. It is the journey. Truth is, when you strip away the hard parts, you don’t get a better life. You get a shallow one. Because the rough road isn’t a sign you’re doing it wrong. It might be the surest sign you’re doing it right. My son Iron Will has Down syndrome. He spent his earliest months in a walker just to build the strength to stand. Every step was a fight. Every inchstone and milestone was hard won. And watching him work, really work, for things that come effortlessly to other kids didn’t break my heart. It expanded it. Because what I saw wasn’t limitation. I saw determination unencumbered by societal expectations. I saw joy that doesn’t depend on easy. I saw a little boy who gets up every single time, grins, and goes again on his own terms, at his own pace. My brave little son didn’t teach me about suffering. He taught me what it looks like to pursue life fully - without fear, without shortcuts, and without ever being told what he can’t do. When we decide a life will be too hard before it begins - based on the inherent limitations of our mortal understanding - we end a story before it ever has the chance to be written. We will never tell Iron Will, or any of our children, that the hard road isn’t worth it. Because the greatest stories ever told involve suffering that produces endurance that produces character that produces hope. Dear Friends, After almost 27 years of combined service to our great Nation as a Soldier and a DoD/DoW Civilian, I am officially retired. It has been an incredible honor to serve under these Colors. Each day I looked up and saw our Flag flying brilliantly and boldly, I drew pride in knowing I had contributed something - no matter how small and innocuous my contributions felt at the time - to the preservation of the ideals upon which our Nation was founded and for which those Colors stand. I had the opportunity to retire early and I took it. Because a new mission set calls. Serving with Team Iron Will full-time to champion the intrinsic value of people with Down syndrome and defend/advocate for the most vulnerable in our society. I can’t wait to engage with y’all more frequently and to see what we can achieve together! Relentless. Forward. Progress. #TeamIronWill #DownSyndromeAdvocacy

SITREP: Iron Will is being released on his own recognizance (kinda) for good behavior! Monitoring required. Oxygen levels are staying stable and he’s responding well to all the other treatments. And he’s getting more animated the closer he gets to the front door! Oh, and guess what he is asking for, “when we get home?”… It’s a daunting task, but our goal now is to isolate him from the flu ravaging the rest of our posterity to the extent possible. And to strengthen those little lungs. I can’t adequately express my appreciation for the prayers, thoughts and kind words from all of you. It moves me tremendously every time the wee little man is ailing and all of you step up! More on that in my next post! #IronWill #DownSyndrome #TeamIronWill

“Burden to society,” my ass! Iron Will was intrinsically valuable from the moment he was conceived. And he walked out of the womb with a solid work ethic. In fact, in the face of adversity, discrimination and doubt, this little dude gets more done by 0900hrs every morning than most of his detractors do all year. He wants to contribute and he loves knowing he’s part of the team. And the heck with his 25% lower muscle tone - the wee little man moves virtual mountains at pace - without complaint. Doesn’t matter what they accomplish, are able to do, or how they communicate, this world is infinitely better because everyone with Down syndrome is in it. And I… well, I am a better man because I know Iron Will, learn from him, and was blessed with the opportunity to love him. BAM! The hospital is paroling the wee little man! He had a good night, his oxygen levels were more consistent and he’s responding well to the antibiotic regimen so they’re sending him home! He’ll be on oxygen at home and we’ll keep monitoring him, but this is huge! Besides, they’re unsure of how best to contain Iron Will’s dynamic personality and energy. And “bedside baseball” has a shelf life… 😂😂 Thank you all for your unrelenting prayer and support! What a gift you are to our family! God bless! #IronWill #DownSyndrome #TeamIronWill

Dear Team Iron Will and Friends, I’d like to humbly request your prayers… I’ve spent almost all my adult life thus far serving in the Department of Defense - first as a Military Member and then as a Civilian doing protection and security. My goal has always been to make a difference while living in accordance with my values - Faith, Family and Freedom. We started Team Iron Will just over three years ago (Iron Will claims it was the day he was born!) and our impacts already, working on the organization in what little spare time we have (our focus is first on loving God and caring for our posterity - all amazing eight of them!), have been beyond our wildest expectations! Please check out some of what we’ve been able to accomplish here: And now I want to do more! I think God wants me to do more. Iron Will and the most vulnerable in our society need me to do more. To make a meaningful impact in a different way. Our Medical Advocacy Program is taking off big time, and we’re getting ready to launch a TIW Ambassador campaign as well! So I’m considering putting my trust in our Creator and throwing everything I have into championing the intrinsic value of people with Down Syndrome. I know it won’t be easy or safe, but are the most consequential, worthy endeavors ever easy?!!! Each Christmas, the youngest member of our household lays the Infant Jesus to rest in His crib as we focus on the day’s greatest gift - Christ’s entry into this broken world - hope manifest. The task now falls to the wee little man and previous years have proven, well, eventful… But this year was perfect. As many of you know, Iron Will is also a huge fan of birthdays and thought it fitting to honor his Savior in the best way he knew how. Enjoy! Merry Christmas! Last night’s dinner was barely down his gullet and Iron Will was clamoring to get back to batting practice. So we did. Until it got dark.
