But it was intentional. Modern games are terrified of frustrating you. They want you to feel like a god without any friction. But GTA 4 does the exact opposite. It constantly fights you. Take Roman. The "let's go bowling" meme is legendary because players hated it. But technically, it’s genius. It perfectly captures how exhausting it can be to deal with family responsibilities. You never really have any time that's just yours. Same goes for driving. Cars handle like boats. You can't just hold down the gas like you do in GTA 5. You have to respect the weight, brake early, and actually learn the streets. Rockstar used frustrating gameplay to put you directly in Niko’s shoes. The "American Dream" in GTA 4 isn’t a power fantasy playground, and you aren't a superhero in the city. You're just a stranger forced to adapt to it. When a game frustrates you, it's usually just bad design. But when GTA 4 makes you rage at a toll booth or sigh at a poorly-timed phone call, it’s doing exactly what it meant to. You're feeling what Niko feels. Did you like the realism, or do you wish it played more like GTA 5?

Characters look real, because they are. ❌ 3D modeling ✅ Filming This indie dev: - recorded professional actors - color graded the raw videos - imported them into the engine - sliced them into separate animations 100% Full Motion Video (FMV) I reached out to the dev, and he gave me some behind-the-scenes footage you can see below. Such a smart way to get photorealistic graphics without melting your GPU. Basically a modern version of the trick that was used in the classic Mortal Kombat. I think we'll see this tech in more indie games soon.

Frontlines looks fun, but the map is "meh" Battlefront maps felt like real planets because DICE used photogrammetry to capture the real world. They literally scanned actual geological formations (like Iceland and the Redwoods) to build 1:1 organic topography, instead of using flat modular assets. Of course there's a massive budget difference between the two, Frontlines is just a Fortnite mod after all. I'm just saying it probably won't scratch that Battlefront 3 itch. Anyone tried it?

No OLED or Mini-LED? Turn off HDR. A basic LCD monitor aggressively compresses the bright lighting to fit its 400nit limit and flattens the image. Worse… to hit that fake peak, it cranks global brightness to 100%. This completely washes out the darks. Cheap HDR basically takes the game's lighting, squeezes it from the top and stretches it from the bottom. Don't let the "HDR" marketing sticker fool you. You're better off going with SDR all night. But if you do have an OLED or Mini-LED, turning on HDR will make a real difference after you calibrate it. Here's a comparison on my Mini-LED TV 👇 Notice how the shadows stay dark while the highlights pop. This is what HDR is supposed to look like.
