🚨BIG | Live-in Relationship to soon not be allowed under UCC in Assam; 👇🏼: Read more In a landmark decision, the Assam Cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday approved the draft Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill. The proposed legislation is scheduled to be introduced in the state Assembly on May 26. Addressing the media after the meeting, Sarma said the Cabinet discussed the UCC in detail. The UCC will not be applicable for both hills and plains regions. The code aims to establish uniform rules on marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption. Key provisions include a complete ban on polygamy and child marriages, live-in relationship. The law will not enforce uniform religious practice. Practices related to worship, Namaz, temple rituals, Christian marriages, Sikh marriages, and other faith-based customs will not come under the proposed law. The move fulfills a major BJP election promise in Assam and follows the state’s 2025 anti-polygamy law.
