One piece of advice I wish I had when I started? You’re not going to be able to predict the journey. When I founded Hyliion, we started as an electric vehicle company in Pittsburgh. Today, we’re in Austin, focused on power generation, and going after one of the biggest infrastructure opportunities of our lifetime: AI data centers. You can have a clear vision for where you want to go, but the path to get there will almost always surprise you.

I’m holding one of the parts inside our KARNO Power Module... This was 3D printed, just like many of the components inside KARNO. Why does that matter? Because additive manufacturing lets us completely rethink how we build heat exchangers. Inside this part, inlet air moves through one set of passageways while exhaust gas moves the other way, allowing us to reach efficiencies that weren’t possible before. All thanks to 3D printing!

I get this question all the time… The hardest obstacle is access to capital. And honestly, it’s a challenge almost every founder faces. You need capital to scale, hire the right people, and keep hitting milestones. For us, we bootstrapped in the beginning. I put in personal cash, then we started reaching key milestones, entered business plan competitions, and raised non-dilutive capital, which was huge. But eventually, we had to go out and raise money from investors. That capital is what helped get us to where we are today.
