A 2,000-year-old Jewish ritual bath weighing about 25 tons was lifted intact from the ground in the southern city of Kiryat Gat this summer, the Israel Antiquities Authority said on Thursday. The Second Temple-period mikveh was uncovered during salvage excavations before construction in the city’s Carmei Gat neighborhood. The discovery provides evidence of a previously unknown Jewish settlement between the Judean Lowlands and the northern Negev, the IAA said. Read more on The Times of Israel.

Decades after one of Eastern Europe’s most important synagogues was destroyed under Nazi and Soviet rule, archaeologists have uncovered the central dais, or bimah, of the Great Synagogue of Vilnius, Lithuania. Excavators were able to access the site for the first time after a Soviet-era building that stood over it was destroyed about eight months ago, excavation co-director Jon Seligman of the Israel Antiquities Authority told The Times of Israel. The synagogue, which served as the center of the city’s 60,000-strong Jewish community before the Holocaust, was ransacked by the Nazis in 1941 and then destroyed under the Soviet regime in 1957, he said. Over a hundred radical pro-settlement Israelis, accompanied by Economy Minister Nir Barkat, of Likud, breached an IDF checkpoint to enter a closed military zone around the Gaza Strip in a bid to enter the Palestinian enclave. A routine salvage excavation ahead of the construction of a new bus terminal in Ramat Gan revealed a surprising find: an industrial and commercial complex dating back some 1,300 years. Digging for several months in the parking lot of the city’s Winter Stadium, archaeologists from the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) uncovered a network of straight, intersecting streets lined with shops, warehouses, large pottery kilns, and a series of industrial installations that once produced liquids on a considerable scale. Polling stations opened across the country Monday morning as candidates jostled for a limited number of positions on the party slate for the October 27 national election. Some 140,000 party members are eligible to vote in the polls, which opened at 10 a.m. and will close at 9 p.m. One of the few parties to determine its electoral lineup via primary, Likud has long prided itself on its internal democratic process. However, changes to the system this year, pushed by Netanyahu, have shrunk the number of open spots on the roster and turned the vote into an unusually hotly contested race as party politicians jockey for a good enough showing to secure a likely Knesset seat. Extremist settlers attacked Palestinians in some 20 locations across the West Bank on Saturday night, a security source told The Times of Israel, with assailants torching homes, vehicles and other property. Earlier on Saturday, Yehuda Sherman, an 18-year-old settler, was killed when a Palestinian-owned pickup truck hit the ATV he and his brother were traveling in close to the illegal settlement outpost where they lived. No casualties were immediately reported from the fires, but the Palestinian Red Crescent said three people were injured in beatings by settlers in the village of Jalud, and six others were injured in beatings in villages in the Jenin area. A statement from the IDF spokesperson said reports were received of “Israeli citizens who burned buildings and property, and disturbed the peace in the area.” The statement said troops were working to restore order, and added that Israel’s security forces “condemn violence of any kind and will continue working to protect residents’ security and order in the area.” There were, however, no reports of arrests, which are highly rare in instances of settler violence.
