Oct 1,1956 at Heathrow Airport an Avro Vulcan B.1 XA897 crashed while attempting to land in poor weather. The captain and co-pilot ejected safely-the crew went down with the plane and all 4 died. They were too low to egress. This footage shows testing of the crew escape hatch. 🫡

Seems like I've seen this one before but no details in the archives other than it looks like a B-29 ditching on the coastline, guessing pacific. Previous shot showed some parachutes in the sky so some of the crew may have said aw hell no. So many hero's.🫡

Interesting closeup footage from April 1, 1945 during the Battle of Okinawa of an LSM(R)'s rocket barrage. This looks like one of the four ships configured to use 85 Mk51 launchers with the capability to fire over 1,000 per minute. I believe the NARA mis-labeled this as LCI-535.🫡

Tragically on May 4, 1945, a 7th AAF B-24, nicknamed "Brief", on a bombing mission against anti-aircraft installations on Koror Island (Oreor), was shot down by AA Fire. Only navigator Lt. Wallace Kaufman survived the crash, however, he was captured and beheaded by Japanese. The executioner and two others were sentenced to 25 years in prison after the war. Debris still remains in a mangrove swamp near the present day Nikko Hotel on Koror Island.🫡

It sank or damaged several Japanese ships, though land targets were limited by radar clutter. It was primarily carried by PB4Y-2's but other aircraft including the F4U Corsair's(seen in this '46 footage) were configured to use it.🫡

on April 30, 1966, XB-70 (AV-2) Valkyrie pilots Al White and Joe Cotton faced disaster when the nose gear jammed after takeoff due to a short-circuit. After failed touch-and-gos to jar it loose, ground engineers diagnosed a faulty circuit breaker. With no tools aboard, Cotton grabbed a binder paperclip from his briefcase, shorted the breaker mid-flight-extending the gear. The malfunction caused hydraulic pressure to remain on 3 of the 4 main wheel brakes which led to the burn up of the Valkyrie main landing gear tires. Serious damage was avoided and the aircraft was able to fly again two weeks later. Tragically, AV-2 would be lost just weeks later in a midair collision with an F-104 chase plane.🫡

On Nov 27th, 1951 Ft. Worth held its breath while this B-36 circled the city's murky skies for some six hours with a defective landing gear. The pilot ordered 16 crew members to parachute to safety and then he and two others prepared for the job of landing the crippled giant.
