on April 30, 1966, XB-70 (AV-2) Valkyrie pilots Al White and Joe Cotton faced disaster when the nose gear jammed after takeoff due to a short-circuit. After failed touch-and-gos to jar it loose, ground engineers diagnosed a faulty circuit breaker. With no tools aboard, Cotton grabbed a binder paperclip from his briefcase, shorted the breaker mid-flight-extending the gear. The malfunction caused hydraulic pressure to remain on 3 of the 4 main wheel brakes which led to the burn up of the Valkyrie main landing gear tires. Serious damage was avoided and the aircraft was able to fly again two weeks later. Tragically, AV-2 would be lost just weeks later in a midair collision with an F-104 chase plane.🫡

On Nov 27th, 1951 Ft. Worth held its breath while this B-36 circled the city's murky skies for some six hours with a defective landing gear. The pilot ordered 16 crew members to parachute to safety and then he and two others prepared for the job of landing the crippled giant.

In 1964, a B-52H hit an 81mph gust of turbulence ripping off most of its vertical tail while over NM's Sangre de Cristo Mtns during a test flight - testing effects of turbulence. Crew used diff thrust, airbrakes & fuel shifts to fly 6hrs & land safely at Blytheville AFB, AR.🫡

In 1929 Detroit Aircraft built the first and only metal-skinned airship with the help of the Hill automatic riveting machine - "sewing" 3.5mil rivets into the hull. Made of thin sheets of Alclad, it completed 752 flights before being scrapped in 1941 due to cost concerns.👀

Concorde 002 icing trials. In the 1970s, engineers used a modified Canberra bomber from Boscombe Down as an airborne "icing tanker" to test Concorde prototype 002's deicing systems-spraying water ahead to artificially create ice clouds. One trial also hit a lightning strike.👀

Some crazy footage from the archives showing a Grumman F9F Panther crashing during a suitability test in 1951 on the USS Midway. I've had this for a while but thought for sure the pilot died so no post. Turns out.... HE LIVED! He was back flying 6 months later. More details👇

From the Jetsons period: The Horton V-16 Wingless Aircraft from the early 50's was actually a lifting-body design that achieved flight to 1,000 feet- thanks to ground effect. Despite early flight success, the program halted due to legal disputes with partner Howard Hughes.👀

In 1950, the USAF tested a wingtip coupling system allowing a B-29 bomber to tow two F-84 fighters with minimal range loss, enabling long-range escort over targets. Over 15 flights and 90 couplings proved feasibility, however the program ended after a fatal crash in 1953.🫡

The Germans attached rockets to everything but this one makes sense. Footage shows a German DFS 230 assault glider rigged with rockets under wings assisting with taking off after landing- so not a glider.🤔 They also tested reverse rockets in the nose to decelerate rapidly. 👀

In 1946 the British loaned the French Navy an aircraft carrier, Arromanches, and a key aspect of its operations was the use of surplus U.S. Hellcats and Helldivers. This is HD colored footage of the ship in 1949, during the Indochina war (a precursor to the Vietnam War).🫡
