I visited a massive Syrian captagon production & export facility. It’s a short drive from Damascus, the seat of power of the Assad family which long denied any links to the billion-dollar narcotics trade. Inside: a periodic table of chemicals and thousands of pills concealed in voltage stabilizers, fruit, decorative pebbles and furniture. Celebrations in Beirut’s Martyrs Square after veteran diplomat & ICJ president Nawaf Salam was tasked with forming a new Lebanese government, in a stunning shift. People displaced by the Israel-Hezbollah war were still sheltering here just over a month back. Supporters of Salam hope he and new president Joseph Aoun will usher in a period of accountability and prosperity and rebuild the country. The appointment of both, just days apart, is also a historic sign of the erosion of the dominance of Hezbollah, which criticized Salam’s appointment. Video from someone there.
