BREAKING - Israeli strike reported on a residential building in Beirut’s Cola neighborhood. Probably the deepest strike into the city in decades, and is well outside Beirut’s southern suburbs. (Video shared online)

I visited a massive Syrian captagon production & export facility. It’s a short drive from Damascus, the seat of power of the Assad family which long denied any links to the billion-dollar narcotics trade. Inside: a periodic table of chemicals and thousands of pills concealed in voltage stabilizers, fruit, decorative pebbles and furniture. They were ready for export I also heard from the former owner and found signs of who may have been behind it… 🧵 READ:

Beirut tonight: 1000s of people displaced by Israeli airstrikes & spending the night in the streets. “We’re just out for a spin, we’ll be home soon” a woman tells me, steely-eyed. Men roll out mats. Elderly try to get comfy on the ground. Children play, as they always do.

I spent a month looking at how Syria’s economy — and power — is being reorganized after Hayat Tahrir al-Sham took over, traveling to Idlib, Hassia and Damascus to speak with key business leaders and officials. It’s a tale of two Syrias 🧵

Damascus’ grand Hamidiya Souk today — and the magnificent Umayyad Mosque. Thousands of rebels and civilians visiting as some shops reopen. They are going to need a helluvalot of green paint to redo all those Syrian flags!

. Caroline Rose, whose organisation New Lines Institute tracks all publicly recorded captagon seizures and lab raids, said the site our team visited appeared to be one of the biggest captagon labs that has been found. "It’s very possible that it's the biggest one that existed in regime-held Syria," she said. Syrian businessman Fares Al-Tout said his family had owned the factory before Syria's civil war, when it was built to produce potato chips branded Captain Korn. He said it was seized in 2018 by a businessman close to Maher, Amer al-Khiti. "They flipped it from the production of food to the production of captagon that killed Syria's children in support of the Fourth Division," Tout told Reuters. The U.S imposed sanctions on Khiti in 2020 over his ties to the Assad regime. Britain imposed sanctions on him in 2023, saying he "operates and controls multiple businesses in Syria which facilitate the production and smuggling of drugs, including captagon." Khiti could not immediately be reached for comment. On the scene, I found electoral pamphlets for Syria's peoples assembly lying on the floor with Khiti listed as one of the candidates, as well as separate electoral cards with just his name on them.

5 years ago, Lebanese fed up with the failures of civil war-era rulers raged onto the streets to demand change. The Beirut square that hosted the biggest rallies — where a generation briefly found, then lost their hope — is now home to displaced people fleeing the latest war 🇱🇧

Celebrations in Beirut’s Martyrs Square after veteran diplomat & ICJ president Nawaf Salam was tasked with forming a new Lebanese government, in a stunning shift. People displaced by the Israel-Hezbollah war were still sheltering here just over a month back. Supporters of Salam hope he and new president Joseph Aoun will usher in a period of accountability and prosperity and rebuild the country. The appointment of both, just days apart, is also a historic sign of the erosion of the dominance of Hezbollah, which criticized Salam’s appointment. Video from someone there.

Fighters still celebrating in central Damascus. Most shops remain closed. Police arrived from Idlib & deployed at main junctions. Saw a bread line, people gingerly coming out to see their city cast in a new light. No more mass looting after lots in hours after regime fell.

But Chaoui’s pharma import business is struggling due to new competition and shifting regulations. “We’re not really selling,” she said. Meanwhile, Idlib's Reva Pharma now works double shifts to meet new nationwide demand and has hired more than 100 agents to market goods across the country. Assad’s fall has “been a qualitative leap for our development," said sales manager Mustafa Dugheim. "The domestic market is huge now."
