Earlier today, Mr. John Ehidreme, 56, was arrested for illegally dumping refuse into a drainage channel at No. 18 Oluoga, Ikorodu. The Lagos State Government reiterates that indiscriminate waste disposal is a violation of environmental laws, as it obstructs drainage channels, contributes to flooding, and poses significant public health and environmental risks. Residents are encouraged to actively participate by cleaning their homes, surroundings, drainage channels, markets, business premises, and public spaces within their communities. Earlier today, in a separate enforcement operation, our team apprehended 22 beggars at Oshodi and Agege, comprising adults and a few teenagers. Additionally, 14 adults and 9 children were apprehended at CMS. Clearance operations are also ongoing at Admiralty Way, Lekki, and Addo Road in Ajah. #CleanerLagos

A total of 396 beggars were apprehended by operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps as part of the Lagos State Government’s sustained efforts to sanitize the state and curb illegal activities. The apprehended individuals will be profiled, provided with appropriate assistance where necessary, and handed over to the relevant authorities to facilitate their safe return to their respective states. Dear Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour As opposed to the repeated criticisms and remarks directed at my person by a few irrelevant individuals, I take your own clarification as confirmation that there is no issue with being addressed by any of the names you have now personally identified. Fair enough! Since assuming office as Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources in 2023, we have introduced and implemented several far-reaching initiatives aimed at improving environmental sustainability and public welfare in Lagos State. These include the execution of Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with international partners, the prohibition of materials that obstruct drainage channels, the removal of illegal structures and contraventions impeding the free flow of stormwater, among many other interventions. Of course, we agree that more still needs to be done, and we remain committed to continuously improving our systems, processes, and interventions to better serve the people while we welcome constructive contributions and feedback from well-meaning Lagosians, whose insights play an important role in helping us achieve our shared vision for a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable state. Interestingly, at virtually every stage of these reforms, you have consistently found reasons to oppose or criticize them, even when they have received broad commendation from stakeholders and objective observers. This approach mirrors the exact disposition of your political mentor. For the record, several of the MoUs signed by the Lagos State Government are at the implementation stages, and in the coming weeks, Lagosians will begin to witness tangible outcomes from these strategic partnerships. We are confident that these initiatives will deliver significant benefits to the state and its residents. Constructive criticism remains an important part of public discourse. However, it is equally important to acknowledge progress and commend worthwhile initiatives when they yield positive results. A balanced perspective serves the public interest far better than perpetual cynicism. Aburo, come down from your imaginary high horse. There is so much to learn, and to learn, you must be humble enough to acknowledge and admit your usual ignorance. Cheers!

Following reports of flooding yesterday at Apongbon and Marina axis of Lagos Island, caused by several hours of intense rainfall, our emergency response team immediately mobilized to the area to monitor the situation and provide the necessary interventions. I am pleased to inform Lagosians that the stormwater has since receded, as evidenced by the image below with the timestamp. We appreciate your concern, patience, and continued cooperation. Today, we continued the reopening of the blocked drainage channel along Chevron Drive, which had been obstructed by Aje Residence Real Estate Agency. This drainage channel is critical to mitigating flooding and protecting the Ajiran community. During the enforcement operation, a principal representative of the real estate company mobilised nearly 20 uniformed personnel in an attempt to obstruct our officials from carrying out their lawful duties. Normalcy was restored following the timely intervention of the Inspector General of Police, TUNJI DISU , who directed the immediate withdrawal of the personnel. We remain resolute in our commitment to protecting lives and property across Lagos State. We will continue to enforce environmental laws without fear or favour, regardless of whose interests are affected. #ZeroToleranceLagos

Earlier today, I led an extensive inspection tour of critical drainage infrastructure and flood mitigation projects across Lekki, Agungi, Ikota and Ajiran, and what we uncovered demands immediate and decisive action. The persistent flooding in Agungi despite the completion of major drainage infrastructure over two years ago has a clear cause. At Ajiran, we discovered that a land owning family deliberately blocked the outfall channel that was specifically designed to discharge stormwater by gravity into the Lagos Lagoon. I have directed that the outlet be reopened immediately in the overriding public interest. Let me state clearly: no individual or family has the right to obstruct natural watercourses or public drainage infrastructure regardless of their land titles. We are not taking anyone's land. We are simply restoring the channel to allow water to flow freely and protect thousands of residents from avoidable flooding. At Megamond Estate in Ikota, we found that developers had illegally reclaimed part of the Ikota River and commenced construction without obtaining the necessary environmental and drainage approvals. Enforcement and abatement notices had been served previously but were ignored. From tomorrow morning, all illegal structures erected on reclaimed drainage alignments without approval in that estate will be removed. This action sends a clear message that Lagos will not tolerate encroachment on drainage channels or public infrastructure. I also reiterate that any development involving wetlands or water related projects must obtain an Environmental Impact Assessment and Wetland Clearance from the Ministry before any reclamation or construction begins. We do not care whose ox is gored. It is unfair to law abiding residents and unacceptable because it compromises public safety. I urge every Lagosian to remain vigilant. The illegal activities we uncovered today came to our attention through whistleblowers. We investigated, verified, and acted. See something, say something - constructively. We are fully committed to a #CleanerLagos and a #GreaterLagos.

Tomorrow morning between 6:30am and 8:30am, we begin a new chapter in our collective journey toward a cleaner Lagos. The monthly environmental sanitation exercise returns, and I am calling on every resident to come out and participate actively. Let me address the confusion some have tried to create. No court pronouncement has invalidated this exercise. The State proceeded to the Court of Appeal, and judgment was delivered in our favour. The Court affirmed that the laws used for the implementation and enforcement of environmental sanitation are legitimate and constitutional. So disregard those who choose to mislead the public. We have planned this for over a year. We have thought it through. We cannot keep complaining about dirty surroundings and blaming government while shirking our own responsibilities. The care of our environment is a collaborative project between government and citizens. Major transport unions controlling about 90% of vehicles on our roads have pledged not to deploy their vehicles from major parks during the sanitation window. If government vehicles are staying put, what will it cost us to stay home for just two hours to clean our environment? We are not unreasonable. Exceptions exist for emergencies, scheduled flights, and students writing JAMB exams. LAWMA has been fully mobilized to evacuate waste generated. Environmental health officers will monitor properties, and defaulters will be served abatement notices. Tomorrow, let us show Lagos and the world that we are ready to take ownership of our environment. Two hours. One Saturday each month. The Lagos State Government has inaugurated a Special Task Force to combat indiscriminate waste dumping across the metropolis, particularly on roads, bus stops, garages, and lay-bys. As part of the initiative, members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) will work with government agencies as “waste police” to monitor and report environmental violations. Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi , emphasized that tackling environmental abuse requires collaboration between government and transport unions, warning that offenders will face sanctions. He also directed union leaders to ensure cleanliness in their garages and parks, discourage indiscriminate trading, and remove illegal structures that contribute to waste generation. Deputy Chief of Staff, Mr. Sam Egube, highlighted the critical role of transport workers in maintaining public order and security, urging them to report suspicious activities and support efforts to keep Lagos clean and safe. LAWMA Managing Director, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, PhD , noted that Lagos generates about 13,000 tonnes of waste daily and called on transport unions to help prevent waste disposal on roads, promote proper waste management, and stop street trading around bus stops and newly constructed roads. Stakeholder Sola Giwa assured the unions of government support in enforcing sanitation standards, removing illegal shanties, and maintaining clean transport facilities. In response, the transport unions pledged their commitment to partnering with the government in waste policing and environmental sanitation across Lagos. #AGreaterLagosRising

Earlier today, we received a report that a woman identified as Mrs. McCarthy, of No. 56 Adaranijo Street, Pedro, Shomolu, allegedly encouraged her child to dispose of refuse into a covered drainage channel. Following the report, our enforcement officers promptly carried out an investigation, which led to her arrest for violating the State’s environmental laws. We expect every resident to act responsibly and to educate their children on the importance of protecting public infrastructure, particularly drainage systems. Encouraging acts that contribute to blocked drains and environmental degradation is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. A clean, safe, and flood-resilient environment is a shared responsibility. We urge all residents to dispose of waste properly and support the collective effort to keep Lagos clean. #ZeroToleranceLagos

When people say Lagos is dirty, Lagos smells, it's not a ficticious statement - if anything, it is the sum total of our collective irresponsibility. Indiscriminate dumping of waste, blocking of drainage channels, open defecation, how would Lagos not be dirty?! The Lagos State Govt will not tolerate any form of indiscipline and indiscriminate waste disposal; there is a system of collection, use it. Flouting the rules will now carry grave consequences. On 13 March 2025, at approximately 7:47 a.m., an individual identified as Nwakwo Patient was observed illegally dumping refuse at Alimosho Bus Stop along New Ipaja Road. Further investigations at her residence confirmed the absence of a designated waste storage facility. While the suspect claimed to be registered with the Private Sector Participant (PSP) operator servicing the area, she was unable to provide any supporting evidence of such registration or payment for waste collection services. The suspect will be prosecuted in accordance with the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017 to ensure compliance with waste management regulations. Earlier today, I joined the ARISE TV Morning Show to discuss two critical issues that affect every Lagosian: flooding and waste management. One point I made very clear is that while we can significantly mitigate flooding, it would be unrealistic to promise its complete eradication. Lagos is a coastal city, and the combined impact of climate change, rising sea levels, rapid urbanisation, and decades of development on wetlands has made flooding an increasingly complex challenge. Our responsibility is to remain proactive by investing in drainage infrastructure, enforcing physical planning regulations, removing obstructions from drainage channels, and leveraging data and science to strengthen our flood management strategies. I also addressed the recent waste collection challenges and offered my sincere apologies to Lagosians. Government must always acknowledge service gaps and remain accountable to the people. However, we are not standing still. We are transitioning from the traditional “collect and dump” approach to a more sustainable circular economy model, where waste is transformed into valuable resources through recycling, composting, and waste-to-energy initiatives. That transformation is already underway. Governance is not about making unrealistic promises or offering easy answers. It is about making informed, evidence-based decisions that serve the long-term interests of our people. I appreciate the ARISE NEWS team for providing the platform to discuss what we are doing, the progress we have made, and the work that still lies ahead as we continue building a #CleanerLagos and a #GreaterLagos.
