If Labour does well tonight in Holborn and St Pancras, that may well be an inverse indicator for how the party would do across the country in a general election. It shows they have pandered to the Greens, ripped up the moderation agenda, and adopted Corbynism with Northern characteristics.

I can't believe I'm sharing this, but here is 13 year old Tom, vlogging on his youtube channel from his bedroom. This a video from a channel long since shut down, from the year of our lord 2010. None of it is my proudest work - but I got better as I got older. I learned skills and made friends, some of whom I still know to this day. Making these silly videos over time taught me so much about video editing, talking to cameras, and being effective on social media. I failed a lot before I got better. But I had the chance to try. I developed skills that have helped me enormously in adult life. Had I not been able to make silly videos on youtube - and get motivated/excited about thousands of people watching them - my subsequent life would have certainly looked very different. Some might argue that would have been for the better, but it would have certainly been for the more boring.

"This is a grievous breach of national security." Olly Robbins calls for "prosecutions" as says he is "deeply concerned" about the leaks from the UKSV process, pointing the finger at Downing Street. The system "does not work" if it leaks, he says. "That trust, once gone, cannot be got back." "I am struck and saddened that within days... of the Cabinet Office for their own reasons deciding to open that up, to share what they thought they had found and their perceptions of it internally with Number 10... I hope that prosecutions will result."

Some more reasons why HS2 is cripplingly expensive: It's not just a railway, it's also a 140 mile long nature reserve. 7 million trees and shrubs. Net biodiversity gains. Rare fauna planting. Chalk hill reshaping. Wetland creation. Cycle paths and bridleways. Reptile habitats. Public viewing points. River realignment with new bends, pools, and riffles. "Alongside the construction of Britain's new high speed railway, HS2 is delivering one of the largest environmental programmes ever undertaken in the UK". You'd think that a new railway would be environmentally beneficial enough. But no. Because this is a government project it can't just be a railway. It has to be a nature reserve too, and a jobs creator, plus a view protector, forest creator, and the most expensive bat protection project in the world. Thanks to all these expensive boondoggles, the railway itself has been cut and cut and cut, and no longer goes to Leeds or Manchester - it's been slashed from 330 miles to 140. It would obviously be better for the environment to have forgone the nature slop and just built the sodding railway in full, on time, and within budget. The Victorians weren't magically better at building than we seemingly are today. When private companies build a railway they care about costs, profit, and efficiency. When a government builds a railway they care about creating a camel to appeal to all people. It can't just be a railway. It has to be so much more. And that's when we see costs spiral to destruction.
