Every golfer in the world has 2 choices when he hits a golf ball… Choice 1….Address the ball in a manner that puts your right arm in a closed pack position of your humeroulnar joint Choice 2….Address the ball in a manner that puts your left arm in the closed pack position… Choice 1 forces you to supinate your right forearm on your takeaway and pronate your left forearm on your downswing… Choice 2 forces you to pronate your left forearm on your takeway and supinate your left forearm on your downswing… The arthrokinematics of your shoulder joint could care less about your swing thoughts, training tools, or tempo. Ryan Fox goes with choice 1 resulting in a left shoulder that adducts/flexes/externally rotates as he goes from zero to contact…. He achieves this using the muscles of motor tract 5 on his left side and motor tract 1 on his right side.

The Pirates haven’t won a Paul Skenes start in over a month and are currently trailing the Marlins 2-1… Skenes has seen a dip in his fastball velocity this season and nobody in Pittsburgh seems to notice he’s holding the baseball with a different set of muscles this year…. Here he is last June holding the baseball with his interossei muscles (left video) compared to his flexor digitorum superficialis today (right video)…. The interossei originate on the hand, the FDS originate on the humerus…. This is why his hand & wrist orientation is so different at the top of his motion as well as at his follow through….

The Pirates lost a Paul Skenes start for the 7th straight time last night…... Look at the box score and you think Paul continues to be the victim of poor run support…. Watch the game and you know Paul is competing with diminished stuff… Paul is at his best when he throws the baseball with the muscles of motor tract 1….He’s used the muscles of motor tract 5 for the majority of this season. Follow Paul’s back knee in each instance… 97 MPH fastball on left vs Rockies last night compared to 100 MPH fastball vs Rockies in August of 2025 on the right.

Andrew Abbott has a 6.59 ERA over 28 IP this season.. He had a 2.87 ERA over 166 IP last season… Andrew threw the ball with the muscles of motor tract 1 last season… He’s using motor tract 5 muscles this season… Watch how differently his left arm and left pec region move through his delivery… Consciously, he’s just throwing the ball….subconsciously his vestibulospinal tract (and others) are signaling different muscles to move his body…. MT5 on left vs MT1 on right

Shohei Ohtani’s barrel percentage is down 8% so far this year… his slugging pct is down over 100 points and he’s walking less and striking out more….. Ohtani is at his best when he uses the muscles of motor tract 1 on his right side…. He’s not his normal self when he uses the muscles of motor tract 4… He’s been in motor tract 4 quite a bit this season…. MT4 on left vs MT1 on right

Fernando Tatis was hitting .342 with 8 HR’s on May 3, 2025…. He’s hitting .261 with 0 HR’s on May 3, 2026… Anybody with eyes can see his body is moving differently…. Anybody that understands neuroanatomy knows why he he’s moving differently…. The muscles that move our shoulder girdle are part of the extrapyramidal motor tracts….This means they are “controlled” subconsciously…. Consciously, Fernando is just hitting….Subconsciously his central nervous system is only allowing him to use his rhomboid minor and 1/3 of his serratus anterior… It’s always the strangest things that change the motor tracts and it has nothing to do with hitting.

Kerry Carpenter has hit 83 HR’s since making his debut in 2022… Yordan Alvarez has hit 135 HR’s in that same time frame… Yordan hits using an open kinetic chain (femur moves on the pelvis)… Kerry hits using a closed kinetic chain (pelvis moves on the femur)…. An open kinetic chain is the “high level pattern” used by “all of the greats”. None of them ever used a closed kinetic chain like Kerry uses….. If you don’t believe that just compare video of their lead hip throughout the swinging motion Watch how different their pelvis moves when they launch their swing.

Here’s a good look at what the Nationals “new focus on technology” has done to James Wood’s swing… James is using the muscles of motor tract 5 on both sides of his body this season. (He hit .125 this spring after going 0-4 with 4 K’s last night) He used the muscles of motor tract 1 on both sides last May when he hit .330 with 7 HR’s. Dylan Crews (.103) and Jacob Young (.125) have used the same motor tract 5 muscles on both sides of their body this spring as well.

If order to hit a big league fastball your brain needs to decide to pull the trigger roughly 25 feet from the ball reaching the plate…. In order to do that, your eyes must be oriented at a spot 25 feet to your left for a righty or 25 feet to your right if you are a lefty…. This begs the question what is the point of hitting off of a tee?…The body will never work the same vs a live ball…. Look how different Mike Trout looks when hitting off of a tee vs hitting a live ball…Watch his left arm and left shoulder do completely different things. The right forearm supinates vs an overhand pitch but it pronates vs the tee…. It’s a function of where the biceps inserts onto the radius. There isn’t a hitter on earth that will use the same swing mechanics off of a tee as they will vs an overhand pitch.

Both Kevin McGonigle and Max Clark typically hit with the muscles of motor tract 1 on both sides of their body….. Kevin begins his load with passive hands/arms… Max begins his load with his hands This is why Max arms are moving forward before his heel hits the ground and Kevin’s stay back until his lateral heel strike…. Look how different their shoulder girdle and trunk look at contact… Max’s hands are leading his shoulders….Kevin’s shoulders are leading his hands.

Mike Trout was a career .301 hitter entering the 2024 season… He’s hit a combined .230 the last 2 years… Trout went from using the muscles of motor tract 1 on his right side to using motor tract 5…. His entire rights side uses different muscles because of it….Watch how different his head moves in each instance…. You can also notice a difference in the thumb muscle securing the bat along with the neck muscle that rotates his head. Cranial nerve 11 innervates the sternocleidomastoid muscle along with the trapezius muscle…..MT 1 uses the sternocleidomastoid as the primary neck rotator…..MT5 uses the trapezius as the primary neck rotator of the neck.
