I’m going to show you two pitches that encompasses the Padres offense Notice the situation bases loaded no outs. First pitch is a nasty sweeper in a 2-1 count. You would hope Manny lays off but it’s nasty and he swings out of his shoes looking to do damage. Okay fine. Now second pitch it’s a full count. It’s now time to be a team player. You would hope Manny shortens up his swing to make it easier for himself to cover whatever is coming. Nope, swings out of shoes again and whiffs on a pitch that has a 10.4% whiff rate. This is a selfish swing to me and it lacks situational awareness especially for a veteran. Then you have Manny nodding his head like yeah you got me. Brother you got yourself out. The team approach is horrible. Sometimes it looks like they just go up there without a game plan. They don’t hunt pitches where they can do damage early or when it’s two strikes they don’t have a 2 strike approach. They have one mode and that’s just to swing and to swing often. Making little to no adjustments inside the same at bat.

This is definitely gonna jinx him but Yuki Matsui is quietly having a good/important season for the Padres. You wouldn’t think so if you just look at the basic numbers. 2.56 ERA is nice but it’s a 4.59 FIP and 0.1 fWAR. Stammen has trusted him in a fireman role and it’s worked so far. Yuki has inherited 28 runners and only allowed 8 runners to score (28.6%). That’s actually a better rate than Morejon who has inherited 29 runners but allowed 9 to score (31.0%). Yuki is 2nd on the team in reliever RE24. A run expectancy stat that basically asks how well did you do in preventing runs given the situation you were placed in. His profile makes sense for a fireman role too. He will nibble and walk hitters but he will also strike hitters out. It’s the bend but don’t break philosophy. He’s 99th percentile in whiff rate at 38.1%. He’s only allowed a .204 batting average in his career too. Anyways, here’s him coming into a bases loaded no out jam and getting out of it unscathed.

Stat line for Joe Musgrove wasn’t great but it is the PCL and I thought he looked fine. What I care about is he got up to 70 pitches and his 4S velo was up 2.2 mph compared to 2024. More optimistic about him now compared to a few weeks ago. Would assume there’s at least one more rehab start.

Dennis mentions Padres looking for a lefty bat preferably in LF. One of the names he mentions is Mickey Moniak. He’s probably my favorite target because he’s shown success at Petco. Something that I do think is important because it’s a brutal place for lefties to hit at. Someone like Arraez suffered a lot because of Petco nullifies hits. Moniak at Petco 55 PAs .278/.291/.574 36.4 K% 1.8 BB% .531 xSLG He’s going to strike out and not walk much but give me the slug trade off. I’m looking for someone to slot in the 2 hole with more juice than Crone. 126 wRC+ vs righties since coming to Rockies. Important because opposing managers are less likely to bring in a lefty reliever when you’re sandwiched in between 3 righties like Tatis, Manny, and France. Moniak is under control for another season after this one so cost shouldn’t be too crazy. There’s definitely risk with this profile but I’m down to bring home the hometown kid.
