The rookie analysts will point to pre PEDs Tatis but I don’t give a fuck about that. I just want 2024 end of season Tatis back. In his last 26 games including playoffs he hit .324/.367/.735 with 11 bombs. He wasn’t scared to whiff. He was just high leg kicking and nuking balls.

Signs of a team not mentally locked in slash not coached well 1 - Manny challenging a call with 2 outs and no one on base 2 - Manny having a real life brain fart on defense 3 - Fermin getting thrown out at third (next hitter gets a single) 4 - Merrill striking out on 3 pitches with runner on third less than 2 outs 5 - Fermin also failing on 3 pitches like Merrill 6 - Fermin still being awful on challenges up in the zone 7 - Known base stealer Miguel Andujar getting thrown out at first More mistakes: Samad settling under a fly ball then wind blows it further is mentionable but forgivable. Tatis getting thrown out in 9th. First two hitters get on in 6th and no one scores. All in one game is really egregious and it’s been a recurring theme all season. This is not a fundamentally sound team.

I’m going to show you two pitches that encompasses the Padres offense Notice the situation bases loaded no outs. First pitch is a nasty sweeper in a 2-1 count. You would hope Manny lays off but it’s nasty and he swings out of his shoes looking to do damage. Okay fine. Now second pitch it’s a full count. It’s now time to be a team player. You would hope Manny shortens up his swing to make it easier for himself to cover whatever is coming. Nope, swings out of shoes again and whiffs on a pitch that has a 10.4% whiff rate. This is a selfish swing to me and it lacks situational awareness especially for a veteran. Then you have Manny nodding his head like yeah you got me. Brother you got yourself out. The team approach is horrible. Sometimes it looks like they just go up there without a game plan. They don’t hunt pitches where they can do damage early or when it’s two strikes they don’t have a 2 strike approach. They have one mode and that’s just to swing and to swing often. Making little to no adjustments inside the same at bat.

Manny Machado has been one of the biggest reasons the Padres don’t have a better record. Since Manny doesn’t like analytics let’s keep it simple he’s hitting .171 on the year with an OPS of .595. Somehow his numbers in high leverage and RISP are even WORSE. His play has been unacceptable. The most frustrating part is him being truly awful when there’s a runner on 3rd base less than 2 outs. His situational hitting makes him look like he’s a rookie instead of a 15 year vet.
