Like way more open than I normally would have it. Steep takeaway. Keep it in front. Steep down. Hit the dirt! Don’t be afraid to take a divot on a short pitch. Aim conservatively. He was playing to avoid the big mistake. Lower expectations when out of position. This is a good result.

This just reaffirms my belief that alignment lines on balls should be banned. Takes forever. And even for a video can’t even align it correctly! (Most players can’t.) And the tests show it doesn’t make players make more putts. Complete waste of time.

Legit big news in the golf equipment world. McLaren, yeah, the high end car company, is jumping into the golf club business. And Justin Rose has signed on to play the equipment. Anyone else think this is a huge risk when his career is having a huge resurgence? He once switched to Honma and had to switch away quick because it hurt his play so bad. Seems like a bold move to change equipment as he seeks another major and has a limited runway left . Interesting to see how it goes! And to try a driver!

Okay, let’s talk about Rory’s “illegal” driver he may have used at the Masters. For those who haven’t heard, Rory’s driver was deemed non-conforming before the PGA. Haters are using this as proof he had an illegal driver to win the Masters. That’s not what it means at all. Driver faces wear over time. After thousands of high impact swings, they can become non-conforming. The governing bodies test a portion of drivers at each event. Every time some drivers are found to be non-conforming. A driver can literally be totally fine one swing and “non-conforming” the next. That’s how tight the tolerances are. It’s impossible for a player to know. A “legal” driver could be fine on the 15th hole and not on the 16th hole. It’s possible Rory’s club was non-conforming at the Masters. It’s also possible it became non-conforming after. Also, it’s guaranteed that other players were playing non-conforming drivers, because they always are. It’s just a bad system. Every driver should be tested every week, simple as that. This half measure just leads to this nonsense. BTW, your driver at home could be non conforming as well. You would never know.

This is a swing I miss seeing in real competition. Dustin Johnson won the Masters* in 2020. Became basically irrelevant 2 years later. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think he regrets a thing. But the fans lost 5 more years of DJ being a top player.

Did Aaron Rai prove the genius “Data Golf Strategists” wrong at Aronimink? Every pundit and player said this would be a “bomb and gouge” tournament. That there was no strategy. Rai swings it just 114 mph. He played for fairways, even hitting 3 wood on some big holes. The course rewarded him. He was able to hit greens at a high rate without the punishment of the rough. Bryson is NOT happy with the course conditions at LIV Mexico. He hits a bad sand shot into the crowd. He gets a decent lie in the rough but isn’t happy. With respect to Bryson, if you hit into the rough, you play it as it lies. It’s not supposed to be perfect. Props to the ref for not giving in. And props to Bryson for the great up and down!
