Turkey may have assumed its NATO membership would deter Israel from striking its military assets in Syria. Israel appears to have found a way around that. The calculation is simple. Strike Turkish weapons and bases inside Syria when Turkish troops aren’t present, avoiding a direct attack on Turkey or its forces that could raise the question of NATO intervention. So far, the dynamic has been clear. Turkey moves weapons into Syria, Israel destroys them, and Ankara responds with rhetoric.

The Islamic Republic spent recent negotiations treating Hezbollah as a bargaining chip, insisting that any ceasefire arrangement had to extend to Lebanon too. Economic pressure, rising fuel prices and deteriorating living conditions are only part of the problem. The regime must also consider whether members of the Basij and IRGC will continue carrying out orders as pressure on the system intensifies. That helps explain the regime’s reliance on foreign proxies. For the Islamic Republic, Iraqi, Afghan and Pakistani fighters serve both as tools for projecting power abroad and as a potential insurance policy against losing control at home.
