Rajaraja Chola, after retrieving the Thevaram hymns from Chidambaram, appointed more than forty Othuvars to render these sacred verses in the Thanjavur Brihadeeswarar Temple, accompanied by musical instruments. It is said that when Kambar sung the verses on Narasimha avatar “அண்டம் கீறிச் சிரித்தது செங்கட் சீயம்! - the Lion laughed when the pillar was broken” those who were present there objected saying a lion can’t laugh. Today, we celebrate the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram. “Vande Mataram”, the clarion call that once echoed through the streets of Tamil Nadu during the peak of India’s freedom struggle. It was powerfully invoked by stalwarts like Mahakavi Bharathiyar, V. O. Chidambaram Pillai, and Subramania Siva to awaken the spirit of liberty among the people. During the Swadeshi movement, Bharathiyar’s immortal song ‘Vande Mataram Enbom, Engal Manila Thaayai Vananguthal Enbom’ (“Let us sing Vande Mataram and bow to our Motherland”) became an anthem of resistance, sung by countless patriots as they boycotted British goods.
