Kudakkoothu is a traditional dance performed by Krishna and is vividly described in classical Tamil literature. The Silappadhikaram lists it among the eleven principal forms of dance. As the name suggests, the performance is executed with a kudam (pot), showcasing remarkable balance, agility, and artistic skill. According to tradition, Krishna performed Kudakkoothu in the streets of Sonitapura after liberating his grandson Aniruddha, who had been held captive by Banasura. The Azhwars celebrate this divine dance in several of their pasurams. Andal, in particular, praises Krishna as: “குடத்தை எடுத்தேறவிட்டு கூத்தாடவல்ல எம் கோவே” (“O my Lord, who is adept at tossing the pot aloft and dancing with it!”) The popularity of Kudakkoothu is also reflected in temple art across Tamil Nadu, where numerous sculptures depict Krishna gracefully performing this distinctive dance with a pot.
