While the rain was still pouring down, first responders rushed into action in Kerr County. In the air, on the ground and by boat, they rescued several hundred people over several days – some trapped in vehicles, some in flooded homes, even some found clinging to trees miles from where they started — all with no way out. This is one of the rescues performed by DPS’ Aircraft Operations Division. The joint efforts of first responders – state, local and federal – have been tireless. “The events of the last week have been devastating,” said Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Colonel Freeman F. Martin. “But through it all, our first responders have shown remarkable strength and determination. I am incredibly proud not only of the men and women of DPS, but of all our local, state and federal partners. Their combined work, day after day, speaks volumes about the spirit of Texans, and it is a true honor to work among them.” #protectandserve #kerrvilleTexas

Under #OperationLoneStar, DPS’ efforts to combat human smuggling remain in full force. On Friday, a Texas DPS Trooper pulled over a truck tractor along IH-35 in La Salle Co. for driving on the improved shoulder. During the stop, the Trooper learned that the driver, John David Amaya, 24, of Laredo, didn’t have a commercial driver license. Then, after receiving assistance from a Border Patrol K-9, the Trooper found 23 illegal immigrants stuffed inside the sleeping area of the truck. Amaya was arrested and charged with 23 counts of human smuggling. DPS has ZERO TOLERANCE for human smuggling – a state jail felony with a 10-year mandatory minimum prison sentence in Texas.
