A dangerous windstorm is producing wind gusts over 75 MPH in the Texas Panhandle and West Texas early this evening. Blowing dust is reducing visibility to below one-half mile in the Texas Panhandle, West Texas, Permian Basin, Trans-Pecos, and the Borderland. Humidity levels are below 20 percent in many of these regions, resulting in an extremely critical wildfire danger. A period of even stronger winds, possibly exceeding 80 MPH, may occur early Wednesday morning across the northern and eastern Texas Panhandle as a cold front moves south. These winds will come from the north, posing a significant concern for firefighters and the southern flanks of ongoing wildfires in the Panhandle. The cold front will quickly advance south Wednesday morning, bringing northerly winds to most of Texas by lunchtime Wednesday. Winds may gust over 40 MPH behind the cold front, and we may also see some blowing dust due to the lofted dust across Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, and western Texas that may be pulled southeast by the northwesterly winds.
