75-year-old Donetsk native and former miner, Vitalii Atamanchuk, who spent 7 years in russian captivity, took the ceremonial first kick before a Shakhtar vs Polissia match. Atamanchuk has been a supporter of FC Shakhtar Donetsk since 1961 and worked as a coal miner for more than 40 years. He, his wife, and their son were arrested at their home in occupied Donetsk during the night of September 4, 2018. He was sentenced to 17 years in prison on alleged charges of spying for Ukraine. Vitalii Atamanchuk returned to Ukraine in a prisoner exchange in August 2025. A total of 83 other Ukrainian citizens were also brought home in that exchange.
