In 2016, I had the sacred privilege of organizing the first stake in Prague, Czech Republic. You can imagine the joy I felt returning 10 years later to dedicate a beautiful new stake center in this same stake. Being a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in this region has not always been easy. Yet through unwavering devotion and trust in the Lord, the faith of members of the Church has endured. As we look back with gratitude for those who came before, we can move forward with hope and confidence in the future. This new meetinghouse symbolizes the faith of members old and new and will be a blessing for all who come and see.

Surrounded by majestic mountains and serene lakes, Salzburg, Austria has a quiet beauty that has long touched our hearts. Harriet and I felt a deep sense of gratitude as we returned to this remarkable place—a place filled with sacred memories. I was serving in the Europe West Area Presidency when Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles—who had once served as a young missionary in Salzburg in 1937—organized the Salzburg Austria Stake in 1997. Now, nearly 30 years after that special occasion, I was blessed to dedicate the beautifully renovated Salzburg Stake Center. Moments like these remind us that the Lord is mindful of His children, wherever they may be. We express heartfelt gratitude for the faithful members who are building up The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in this land. Much of what has been accomplished is the result of quiet devotion—of disciples, both seen and unseen, who follow the Savior with humble, steadfast faith. I pray that this chapel will always be a house of peace—where Jesus Christ is at the center, where His love is felt, and where all are joyfully invited to come unto Him.

As a teenager, my life was peppered with uncertainties and anxieties about the future. One day during my Sunday School class, my teacher shared a verse of scripture that changed my perspective and brought an infusion of light into my mind and heart. These words have continued to help me in many of life’s situations.

The scaffolding on the Salt Lake Temple helped restore the temple to its original beauty with more strength. It was there to help protect the House of the Lord—evidence of love and care for something sacred. In our lives, the Lord offers scaffolding as well. Parents, good friends, teachers, leaders, commandments, covenants, and even seasons of correction and stretching—they are there to help us gain better access to the light and life that will bring us back to our heavenly home and safely reach our eternal destination. We rejoice in Jesus Christ because He is the master builder. His grace is sufficient to refine, restore, repair, rebuild and bless your life now and forever.

This upcoming opening of the Temple Square Visitors’ Center on May 18 is just the beginning of an unprecedented public invitation to the world to come and see inside the historic Salt Lake Temple from April-October 2027. This celebration will be a magnificent opportunity for all of God’s children to rejoice in the love of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Redeemer.

Jesus Christ is the light that leads us through life.

The counsel to stand in holy places becomes especially meaningful when the world around us feels unsettled—when confusion presses upon our minds and concern weighs on our hearts. My time this weekend at the Laie Hawaii Temple, BYU–Hawaii, and the Polynesian Cultural Center has reminded me again how vital this counsel truly is. Here, I see students choosing to stand in holy places—not only by where they are, but by how they live. As we place our trust in Jesus Christ, He does not remove every challenge, but He does give us strength to face them. In Him, we find steadiness, peace, and hope—even in difficult times.

As you make time for quiet, spiritual moments, you will learn that the Lord indeed does know you—and He knows your heart.

Our origin story is divine and so is our destiny. I was reminded of this today as I visited with students at BYU–Hawaii. Each of us left heaven to come here—but heaven has never left us! These young people—and all of you—are blessed beings of light, the spirit children of an infinite God! And you bear within you a potential beyond your own capacity to imagine.

There may be times when you may think of other, more capable people who could more successfully accomplish what you have been called to do. The counsel I shared with students at BYU–Hawaii this weekend applies to all of us. Remember that the Lord put you here, now. And He did it for a reason. This is your season. You may not see the reason clearly now, but faith requires that we proceed without seeing—trusting the Lord. Let us not get discouraged or frustrated when things don’t go perfectly. We are all a work in progress. Through Jesus Christ, we will be able to become our best selves and accomplish the work God wants us to do.

My dear friends, no one is perfect in this fallen world. We will all sin and make mistakes. But this is not the end. In the evening, when you kneel down and pray to Heavenly Father, ask for forgiveness, clear your heart, clear your mind, and clear your life through repentance. Have faith in Jesus Christ, get a good night’s rest, and when you get up in the morning, you’ll find a new day. The sun is coming up again and God is giving you a new beginning on your path of discipleship. The strength of the gospel and the power of Jesus Christ and His Atonement are the good news we all need to embrace.

In the 19th century, early members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Laie, Hawaii, were baptized at this beach. Years later, the Laie Hawaii Temple was built just a few hundred yards directly in front of this beach. This is a beautiful representation of the connection in covenant making—first to be baptized, then going to the temple to make further covenants there.

Life is sometimes not fair. But Jesus Christ is always fair. And He will always take care of us.

Perhaps more than any other season, Christmas invites us to pause, breathe deeply, and remember what matters most. The heart of Christmas is the message of a loving Father in Heaven who sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to bring light into our world and into our individual lives.

It is not our physical appearance, political views, culture, or ethnicity that brings us together in the Savior’s Church—The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It is our common objective, our love for God and neighbor, and our commitment to Jesus Christ and His restored gospel that unites us to be “one in Christ” (Galatians 3:28). That is what Christ’s true Church is all about. #GeneralConference
