NEW: Canadian Oil Giant Enbridge Builds Unauthorized Pipeline Bypass Following 1.3 Million Gallon Spill The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) repeatedly requested Enbridge keep its Line 5 pipeline shut down following the largest oil and gas spill in state history on Aug. 25. Enbridge defied the requests. Without receiving the required permits, it built a new pipeline to bypass the rupture and restarted Line 5’s operations. Enbridge’s actions raise serious questions about the state’s ability to regulate large, multinational corporations and its willingness to enforce its permits. BREAKING: Enbridge Line 5 Spills Natural Gas Liquids in Northern Wisconsin Enbridge’s aging Line 5 pipeline is spilling natural gas liquids in northern Wisconsin. The rupture occurred just east of the Bad River Reservation near Lake Superior on August 25, 2026. According to Enbridge, an unoccupied semi-truck rolled into an excavation site and struck the pipeline. The Canadian oil giant faces numerous legal challenges over its operation of Line 5. The 73-year-old pipeline carries oil and natural gas liquids through the heart of the Great Lakes region. Experts warn that it risks rupturing into the world’s largest bodies of freshwater. NEW: 'March on DNC 2024' Protest Marshals Block Protesters From Approaching DNC Venue As several thousand protesters took the streets of Chicago on the first day of the Democratic National Convention (DNC), an extended melee occurred as dozens of protest marshals physically blocked certain protesters from going off the approved route of the protest. The confrontation lasted nearly the whole seven-block route from Union Park to Park 578 and revolved around protest marshals cordoning off protesters who wanted to get close to the fences of the security perimeter for the United Center, where the DNC is being held. “You see this? They’re blocking you from the butchers of Gaza!” There were no physical injuries seen or reported despite tussling and argumentative yelling. The ruckus was watched by Chicago Police officers (CPD) on bikes who were monitoring the protest in the hundreds. The organized protest marshals and participants called out for the CPD to intervene. Masses of crowd control munitions were used on hundreds of community members gathered in Minneapolis. Federal agents, Hennepin County Sheriffs, Minneapolis Police, MN State Patrol, and MN Conservation Officers all worked together to violently suppress the organic protest in sub-zero temperatures.

NEW: Police arrested video journalist and Unicorn Riot contributor River Akemann while he was documenting Enbridge Line 5 construction on August 24. He was monitoring fish in a creek where Enbridge lacks necessary authorization to install its pipeline. He received four misdemeanor charges and was released later that day. The charges include disorderly conduct, trespassing, unlawful assembly, and resisting arrest. Canadian oil giant Enbridge has a secretive deal with Ashland County to reimburse the sheriff’s department to act as private security. Enbridge is paying police using the Wisconsin Counties Association, a lobbying group, as the pass through. The Association is not subject to state open records laws. The public won’t know how much Enbridge is paying law enforcement or how the money is being spent. Multiple groups are suing Canadian oil giant Enbridge for proceeding with Line 5 construction without required property interests at 49 water crossings. Plaintiffs include the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and multiple environmental organizations. On August 14 and 17, water protectors waded in a stream where Enbridge was trenching without necessary authorization. The group held a prayerful presence in the stream and stopped construction for multiple hours. Four individuals received citations for allegedly violating an Ashland County trespassing ordinance with fines totaling $1,500. Public trust law protects access to navigable waterways in the United States. Enbridge’s Line 5 pipeline transports 22 million gallons of oil and natural gas liquids each day through the Great Lakes region. The pipeline is 73 years old, operating 20 years beyond its engineered lifespan. Enbridge is pushing to complete a 41-mile Line 5 reroute around the Bad River Reservation in Northern Wisconsin, despite numerous legal challenges.

NEW: Minnesota 15 Defendant Isaac Sant Speaks Out Healthcare worker and activist Isaac Sant is one of 15 people in Minnesota who were recently federally indicted on felony conspiracy charges for their community activism during ICE's deadly Operation Metro Surge immigration enforcement. "It's about quelling dissent in Minneapolis. And it's about coming after the movement that rose up against ICE during Metro Surge in December and January," Sant told Unicorn Riot during an interview. Seeking to further criminalize legal observing and protesting, the federal indictment accused the defendants of opposing the authority of the government and impeding their federal operations by posting opinions to Facebook, being present at protests, attending meetings where direct actions were spoken upon, and wearing certain clothes. The indictment calls many of the defendants “anarchists” and “antifascists,” both descriptors newly named as “terror groups” in the latest White House counterterrorism strategy. These charges are a continuation of Trump’s vindictive domestic policies against the left as he directs federal agencies to go after political opponents using NSPM-7 and his executive order designating antifa as a domestic terrorist organization. "This is a naked attempt to silence our voices, to squash dissent and to have a chilling effect on organizing here in the Twin Cities. And I'm here to tell you, it's not going to work. People in the community here are smart. They're resilient. They have an indomitable will. And I have every faith that they're going to keep fighting," said Sant. "This is an attempt by the government to drive a wedge in between good protesters and bad protesters, and try to shave off the radical flank of the movement and paint us like we're different from everybody else. But we're not. There's nothing that we're accused of doing that hundreds of thousands of people here in Twin Cities didn't do when these jack booted thugs were kicking in our doors and kidnapping our immigrant neighbors."
