MacArthur Park Update This morning, FBI Los Angeles arrested Michael Angel Alvarez, 41, a.k.a. “Diablo,” an active 18th Street gang member, convicted murderer, and Los Angeles “Peace Ambassador” who is being paid with L.A. city taxpayer dollars. According to Councilwoman Eunisses Hernandez: “Peace Ambassadors are embedded in the communities they serve. Their presence strengthens safety networks and ensures families have someone to turn to outside of law enforcement when facing non-emergency conflict or community stress.” Alvarez is charged in a federal criminal complaint with possession of body armor by a violent felon, which carries a statutory maximum sentence of five years in federal prison. According to an affidavit filed with the complaint, Alvarez was paid more than $58,000 last year for his work for Healing Urban Barrios, an organization that contracted with the city for its Peace Ambassador program that is run in the city’s Council District 1, which includes MacArthur Park. Alvarez was convicted in 2002 for first-degree murder for which he was sentenced to 50 years to life in state prison, but was released by the State of California after serving just 24 years’ imprisonment. There is no indication Alvarez has ever stopped associating with the 18th Street gang. In fact, in jailhouse telephone call recordings of Alvarez since his release from state prison, he discussed assaulting individuals for breaking gang rules. LAPD Rampart officers who searched Alvarez’s car near MacArthur Park on May 18 discovered two body armor plates in the trunk. The plates are from Las Vegas and are marketed as “the highest protection level available on the civilian market.” The hardworking tax payers of Los Angeles deserve better than to see their money shelled out to a convicted gang murderer.

How it started vs. How it’s going ARRESTED: Bobby Nunez is now under arrest for brazenly towing an ICE vehicle. He is charged with theft of government property. Apparently he thought it would be funny to interfere with our immigration enforcement operations. Now he can laugh behind bars while he faces justice. Nunez is looking at up to 10 years in federal prison if convicted.

Promises made, promises kept. The President and Attorney General Pamela Bondi made clear that we will find, arrest, and charge anyone who attacks our federal agents. This morning we arrested 10 defendants for engaging in violence against officers and property earlier this year in connection with anti-immigration enforcement protests. They are now in federal custody. Among those arrested is Isai Carrillo, who was part of a violent group that attacked and threw rocks at federal agents as they exited the Glass House marijuana farm raid this summer. Peaceful protest is protected. Violence is not. Agitators who harm our officers, agents, and property will be brought to justice.

A federal grand jury has indicted Jacob Daniel Terrazas, 30, of Paramount, for injuring a Border Patrol officer during an anti-ICE riot on June 7. After repeatedly throwing pieces of cinderblock at law enforcement, officers detained Terrazas, who now faces up to 20 years in federal prison if convicted. We will not stand by while our brave officers get hurt. If you're thinking of injuring an officer or agent enforcing immigration law, think again. It's not worth it.

Federal agents were executing a lawful judicial warrant at a LA worksite this morning when David Huerta deliberately obstructed their access by blocking their vehicle. He was arrested for interfering with federal officers and will face arraignment in federal court on Monday. Let me be clear: I don’t care who you are—if you impede federal agents, you will be arrested and prosecuted. No one has the right to assault, obstruct, or interfere with federal authorities carrying out their duties.

Do not assault or interfere with federal agents doing their jobs. If an agent feels threatened, you may get shot, and you will be arrested and charged. Carlos Jimenez, 24, of Ontario, is charged with assault on a federal officer and faces a federal prison sentence after interfering with lawful immigration enforcement yesterday. According to a federal complaint filed today, Jimenez pulled up in a Lexus while federal agents conducted a lawful traffic stop on Thursday morning in Ontario and began arguing with the agents. When told to leave, Jimenez drove forward, then reversed at speed toward agents, one of whom opened fire, wounding Jimenez. He is expected to make his initial appearance this afternoon in U.S. District Court in Riverside. He is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.

ARRESTED: Adrian Andrew Martinez, 20, of Pico Rivera, the individual in the blue Walmart vest, was arrested for an allegation of punching a border patrol agent in the face after he attempted to impede their immigration enforcement operation, in violation for 18 USC 111. I will repeat, if you impede our agents or strike them, you will end up in handcuffs facing federal criminal charges. Don't do it.

ARRESTED: Elpidio Reyna surrendered today at the U.S.-Mexico border to face a felony charge of assault on a federal officer for throwing rocks at passing law enforcement vehicles in Paramount on June 7. He was taken into custody by a U.S. Border Patrol officer who was inside one of the vehicles damaged in the attack — a brave law enforcement officer who could have been killed in last month’s dangerous and reckless attack. I thank FBI Los Angeles , CBP, and USBP Chief Patrol Agent Gregory K. Bovino for their efforts to track down this dangerous felon. To anyone who thinks they can attack federal officers and hide behind a mask or helmet, Reyna’s arrest today proves we can find and charge anyone who violates federal law. Don’t touch our officers. Reyna will make his initial appearance in federal court this afternoon. He is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Former Olympic athlete Ryan Wedding and his gang of criminals – including a Canadian lawyer, a Latin pop star, and a professional poker player – are charged in connection with the murder of a witness against Wedding cocaine-trafficking ring on January 31 in Colombia. So far, 11 defendants, including the lawyer, are in custody for this heinous, brutal attack. I commend our national and international law enforcement partners with making this week’s arrests possible. Wedding remains on the FBI Most Wanted Fugitives List, but we are actively and aggressively seeking his arrest and look forward to the day he sees the inside of a prison cell in the United States of America when he finally answers for what he has done.

Today, United States DOJ DOJ Civil Rights Division under the leadership of AAGHarmeetDhillon and my office sued the California Department of Education and CIF for their ongoing violations of Title IX. Their discriminatory practice of mandating schools to allow boys to compete against girls is illegal, disenfranchises girls’ opportunities, and endangers their privacy, dignity, and safety. California must comply with Title IX and end its civil rights violations against women. No person, no state, is above the law.

Today, Deputy Kirk was sentenced on a misdemeanor violation for use of excessive force. I made the decision to reduce his charges to a misdemeanor, rather than allow him to be sent to prison on a felony. Law enforcement officers are not above the law and should be held accountable for their actions, but given the facts of the incident and the deputy's actions as recorded on a contemporaneous video, I determined that Deputy Kirk's actions do not rise to the level of a felony. In the interest of transparency, I am releasing all the videos from the case, including the body worn cameras. Here are the facts: -Jacy Houseton, was a robbery suspect who spit in the face of a Winco loss prevention employee. -Houseton was not an innocent bystander who was attacked for filming the police, as the media has reported. -It's undisputed that the deputies had probable cause to detain Houseton. -Houseton resisted being detained and attempted to assault the deputy. She was taken to the ground and pepper sprayed, but she did not suffer any serious bodily injury during the arrest. -Deputy Kirk was offered a misdemeanor plea agreement last year under the Biden administration.

Dangerous rhetoric from CA politicians is fueling assaults on federal agents enforcing immigration laws. Their reckless words implicitly encourage violence, escalating tensions. But we won’t back down. Our operations targeting criminal illegal immigrants will continue stronger than ever.

Today, we undertook a major takedown of a sex trafficking operation on the Figueroa Corridor of South Los Angeles. 11 members and associates of the Hoover Criminal Street Gang have been charged with dozens of federal felonies – horrific crimes that could land these defendants in prison for the rest of their lives. These defendants – including Derail Robinson, 22, of South Los Angeles – used social media and music videos to lure young women and children into their network. Some of the victims came from the foster care system and were subjected to violence, threats, and public humiliation. One victim – a 14-year-old girl – was sex trafficked at a South L.A. motel during a span of three consecutive days. Victims were branded with tattoos of the monikers of their pimps. California’s soft on crime laws are unable to effectively combat these horrific acts. Therefore, under the leadership of Attorney General Pamela Bondi, federal law enforcement is partnering with local law enforcement to bring federal charges against these criminals and to liberate the people of Los Angeles from these heinous crimes. Figueroa Corridor residents deserve to live peacefully and not be subjected to criminals profiting off the selling of other humans.
