I managed to recreate the portal VFX in Godot using GPUParticles2D, but the approach is different. It looks like you cannot access the particles' positions, so instead, you need to use a SubViewport with a custom shader. Anyway, I'll include this effect in The Complete Godot VFX Handbook.
