20 years ago today By the morning of July 14, 2006, Lebanon had endured 48 hours of nonstop israeli bombardment. Massacres were committed across the country, civilians were being hunted and forced from their homes, the Jiyeh power plant had been set ablaze, sending oil into the Mediterranean, and bridges, roads, and entire cities had been reduced to rubble. Many believed the war’s outcome had already been decided. Then came Martyr Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah’s announcement that the Islamic Resistance had struck an israeli warship off the Lebanese coast. For many Lebanese, watching the ship that had taken part in the assault on their people burn at sea was the first sign that the enemy would not wage this war without consequence. It restored hope and reminded a nation under fire that Lebanon was not defenseless.
