One of only a handful of original Ruperts remaining in France from the D-Day invasion. On the night before D-Day, the Allies dropped hundreds of dummy paratroopers — nicknamed ‘Rupert’s’ — across Normandy to confuse and scatter German forces. Made of burlap and straw and roughly human-shaped, they were designed to mimic the radar signature of a real airborne assault. Some were rigged with firecrackers to simulate small arms fire after landing. The deception worked, drawing German troops away from the actual drop zones and buying precious time for the real paratroopers of the 82nd and 101st Airborne to secure their objectives.
