During the attack, the bomber was struck by Japanese anti-aircraft fire, tearing off its left wing and sending the aircraft into a fatal flat spin. Of the 10-man crew, nine were killed in the crash. The sole survivor, navigator 2nd Lt. Wallace F. Kaufman, was captured by Japanese forces and later executed. For decades, many believed the bomber had been destroyed by a friendly bomb. Later analysis of the restored footage showed that the fatal hit came from Japanese anti-aircraft fire, not another American aircraft.
