UPDATE: WASHOE COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE LOCATES WALKAWAY INMATE FOLLOWING COORDINATED SEARCH EFFORT The Washoe County Sheriff's Office (WCSO) has successfully located and taken 23-year-old Chase Orput back into custody following a coordinated search after he walked away from a Washoe County Sheriff's Office inmate work crew on Monday, July 27, at approximately 1:30 p.m. On Tuesday, July 28, at approximately 1:00 p.m., deputies located Orput near Interstate 80 and the railroad tracks in the area of mile marker 21 after a citizen from a nearby business recognized him and promptly contacted the Sparks Police Department (SPD). The information provided helped direct SPD officers and WCSO deputies to his location. The SPD further assisted by deploying a drone to provide aerial support during the search, allowing WCSO deputies and Sparks Police officers on the ground to quickly locate and safely take Orput into custody. Orput was evaluated and provided medical care at the scene before being transported back to the Washoe County Detention Facility, where he will face additional escape charges. Orput was serving a 90-day sentence for misdemeanor charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and failure to show or maintain proof of insurance. The WCSO extends its sincere appreciation to our regional law enforcement partners for their partnership and assistance throughout the search effort. The coordinated response between agencies, combined with the vigilance of a community member who reported the sighting, was instrumental in bringing the incident to a safe and successful conclusion. "We are grateful for the partnership and support provided by the Storey County Sheriff's Office and the Sparks Police Department throughout this search," said Sheriff Darin Balaam. "This incident demonstrates the value of strong partnerships between our region’s law enforcement agencies and the important role our community plays in public safety. We also want to thank the citizen who recognized Mr. Orput and immediately contacted law enforcement. Their quick actions contributed directly to this successful outcome." The Washoe County Sheriff's Office appreciates the community's vigilance and cooperation throughout the search.

During his career, Deputy Harris served across many divisions within our office, including Detention, House Arrest, the Training Division, and Patrol, as well as 14 years with the WCSO K9 Unit. In that time, he helped develop and guide the program through his leadership, experience, and commitment to preparing both deputies and K9 teams for the demands of the job. K9 Ava faithfully served alongside Deputy Harris for six years, helping ensure the safety of our deputies, partner agencies, and the community. Last night, Washoe County Sheriff’s Office DFR (Drone as First Responder) pilots used RapidSOS live 911 monitoring to launch one of our unmanned aerial vehicles, commonly known as a drone, in response to a report of a suspicious person in the backyard of a residence in Sparks. The drone was airborne and on scene within three minutes of the call being broadcast to patrol deputies. Once overhead, DFR pilots began canvassing the area and relaying real-time information to responding deputies. Using thermal imaging in low-light conditions, the drone successfully located the suspect in the backyard of a nearby residence on Cromwell Place. Pilots continued to provide live updates on the suspect’s location and behavior, allowing deputies to safely detain the individual without incident. Further investigation revealed the suspect, identified as Ryan Davis, 38, had forcibly entered a residence and moved through multiple neighboring backyards prior to being located. Davis was arrested and transported to the Washoe County Detention Facility, where he was booked on a felony charge of home invasion and an additional charge of trespassing. This incident highlights the outstanding coordination between patrol deputies and our DFR pilots, demonstrating how advanced aerial technology is not used for routine surveillance or to monitor lawful activity. DFRs are deployed for specific, time-limited public safety purposes—their use allows deputies to gain real-time situational awareness before making contact, often reducing the need for force and lowering risk to both the public and responding officers. This technology helps deputies make informed decisions, slow situations down, and choose safer resolutions whenever possible. At its core, this program is about saving time, saving lives, and improving outcomes—for victims, for our community members, and for our deputies.
