In a nationwide first, a drone was successfully used to disarm an armed suspect, helping bring the incident to a safe resolution. Sacramento Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Detail (SWAT) had the residence surrounded. The known felon and Parolee-At-Large was seen earlier with a firearm. After not responding to negotiators, a drone was deployed inside the residence. Drone pilots located the suspect hiding in a corner of a garage. One of his hands was concealed under his body, and the other was holding a knife. He was obviously alive, but not responding. Was he pretending to be dead or simply lying in wait for deputies to approach? Rather than rush into a potentially deadly encounter, one drone pilot came up with an innovative solution. By attaching a powerful magnet to the drone, the pilot was able to safely remove the knife from the suspect’s hand before deputies moved in. It’s also worth noting that our drones are labeled as “military equipment” (even though anyone can purchase them at their local Walmart), but are really just another piece of technology helping deputies resolve dangerous situations safely. When confronted by store security, the suspect fled east on foot. Fortunately, our Drone First Responder (DFR) program was already in the air and quickly located the suspect, tracking his movements to a nearby Arby’s at 80th Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard. Responding officers arrived and were able to safely identify and contact the suspect inside the restaurant. During the investigation, officers discovered the suspect had an active arrest warrant and was allegedly responsible for stealing more than $340 worth of merchandise from the store. The suspect was taken into custody without incident and transported to jail. The Drone First Responder program continues to provide officers with real-time information, helping improve response times and safely resolve incidents throughout our community.

On Wednesday, July 1, at approximately 5:00 p.m., a suspect entered the Community Banks of Colorado branch located at 7530 Grandview Avenue and announced, “This is a robbery.” The suspect also made statements indicating there could be guns and additional people involved. The Arvada Police Department's Drone First Responder (DFR) program quickly deployed a drone to the scene. The drone provided officers with real-time intelligence, allowing them to observe the suspect through the bank's front windows and entrance. This information enabled officers to safely establish a perimeter around the bank and wait for the suspect to exit, reducing the risk of a potential hostage situation. After receiving money from bank employees, the suspect moved toward the front door. Once the DFR pilot advised officers that the suspect was exiting the building, officers immediately contacted and arrested him without incident. The suspect was booked into the Jefferson County Jail on charges of Aggravated Robbery and is awaiting formal charges through the First Judicial District Attorney’s Office. The Arvada Police Department would like to commend the bank employees and patrons for remaining calm and composed during a frightening situation. Quick thinking #DCSO deputies catch another auto theft suspect. On Monday night, patrol deputies responded to a report of an in-progress vehicle theft on Mill Vista Road in Highlands Ranch. Responding deputies quickly established a perimeter and began searching the area. The vehicle was located, occupied, in a parking garage on Mill Vista Road. Upon observing law enforcement in the area, the suspect vehicle attempted to back out of a parking space. The deputy activated the patrol vehicle's emergency lights and pulled forward to signal the suspect to stop. The suspect vehicle accelerated forward, scraping, and colliding with the front passenger side push bumper of the patrol vehicle. The vehicle ran a stop sign and sped away. Deputies pursued the vehicle for a short distance, and the suspect vehicle spun out of control and rolled backwards into a metal railing, where it was pinned in place by deputies. The suspect, later identified as Armon Chism (DOB: 05/15/1982), of Denver, fled from the vehicle, and a short foot pursuit was initiated by pursuing deputies. The suspect was placed into custody after a successful taser deployment. While conducting their investigation, deputies were able to establish probable cause that Chism was a suspect in an earlier vehicle pursuit of a stolen Hyundai Tucson at the intersection of Colorado Boulevard and County Line Road. Chism was found to be in possession of the stolen Hyundai ignition key and the vehicle was recovered nearby. Chism was booked into the Douglas County Jail for investigation of Motor Vehicle Theft, Vehicular Eluding, Obstructing a Peace Officer, Possession of a Controlled Substance (Fentanyl), Protection Order Violation, and Criminal Impersonation. Douglas County Sheriff Darren Weekly said, “We will not allow criminals to victimize Douglas County residents. We are committed to ensuring the safety and security of our community will continue to work tirelessly to protect our residents and their property. I am so proud of my deputies who responded quickly and didn’t give up until this suspect was in custody.”

On Sunday, July 5, 2026, at approximately 10:00 am, our Communications Center received a call of a battered and bloody woman screaming for help in the 2200 block of Zinfandel Drive in Rancho Cordova. As deputies were on their way, additional 9-1-1 calls came in as the woman went door to door attempting to get help. Fortunately, one residence allowed the victim inside to wait for responding deputies. Deputies contacted the victim, who described surviving three days of brutal beatings from her ex-husband. She said she was beaten, pistol-whipped, and strangled until she lost consciousness. Another vicious beating occurred that morning. The victim described how she “played dead” until the suspect left the room. That allowed her to flee the home and seek help. The victim stated she did not know where the suspect might be, but assumed he would still be at her residence where the beatings had occurred. She made sure to remind the deputies that the suspect had a pistol and was always armed. Deputies went to the victim’s residence. The suspect was no longer at the location, and the victim’s vehicle was missing. Deputies put out a BOLO (be on the lookout) for the vehicle to all neighboring jurisdictions. North Patrol Deputies located the vehicle on Fair Oaks Blvd near the intersection of Kenneth Ave. Deputies attempted to conduct a vehicle stop, but the suspect fled, initiating a pursuit. The pursuit eventually traveled onto eastbound I-80, where an officer-involved shooting occurred just west of the Antelope Road exit. ARMED SUBJECT IDENTIFIED AND ARRESTED IN ARDEN AREA INCIDENT On the evening of April 30, North Patrol Deputies responded to the area of La Sierra Drive in the Arden area, about a man armed with a knife , acting bizarre, approaching residences and reportedly attempting to access homes. That incident, which was captured on doorbell cameras understandably raised significant concern among residents. Through investigation, Deputies identified the suspect as 56-year-old Brian Mattson. He was located and arrested this morning without incident. Through their investigation, the only crime they could charge him with was criminal trespassing, a misdemeanor. Deputies learned Mattson was on felony probation; but Sacramento County Probation declined to place a probation hold. As a result, he was released from custody in less than two hours after being booked. For public safety awareness, we are releasing Mattson’s photo. We are asking anyone who may have had contact with him, or who may have been a victim of any unreported crimes during this incident, to come forward. Was he playing possum, or was he possibly unconscious? Recognizing the danger of sending deputies into a confined space with an armed suspect, deputies devised an innovative solution. When certain 911 calls come in, DFR drones launch from permanent docking stations and fly directly to scenes - giving OPD eyes on developing incidents within seconds. Bringing the Grappler to Douglas County! “We’re excited to introduce the Grappler system to Douglas County. We’ve recently purchased, trained on, and equipped five vehicles with this innovative technology to help reduce vehicle pursuits and enhance safety for both the public and our deputies. On December 26, 2025, deputies from our felony unit were in the 2200 block of Buchanan Bay Circle doing surveillance of a homicide suspect so they could serve a DNA search warrant in a murder that happened on Christmas Eve. While deputies were surveilling the residence, two men – the homicide suspect and another man - came out and the second man opened fire on deputies, striking one of our unmarked vehicles. One deputy returned fire, striking the 20-year-old shooter. Deputies rendered aid until paramedics were able to get to the scene and transport the man to the hospital, where he is undergoing surgery tonight. He will face charges for shooting at our deputies. The suspect in our homicide case – who was also armed with a handgun – was detained and was being questioned by our detectives late this evening. As is our standard procedure, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting and will turn over its findings to the State Attorney’s Office for review. Once that process is completed, OCSO will conduct its own internal investigation. The deputy who fired his weapon is on temporary, paid administrative leave.

Technology + teamwork = quick results Just a few weeks ago, officers arrested a burglary suspect in less than an hour thanks to a vigilant neighbor, the Real Time Information Center (RTIC) and APD's Drones as First Responders program. The incident began when a neighbor reported seeing a man enter a home's backyard and leave with a bicycle. Using live camera technology, RTIC quickly located a suspect matching the description riding a bicycle that matched the one reported stolen. Drone technology and real-time updates allowed officers to continuously track the suspect's movements, directing officers to his location within minutes. When officers contacted the suspect, he abandoned the bicycle and tried to run. But we were faster. Officers quickly took him into custody, recovered the stolen bike and other property taken from the residence, and arrested him on probable cause of theft, trespassing and obstructing. This case is another example of how APD's technology, combined with community members who report suspicious activity, helps officers locate suspects quickly, recover stolen property and keep our community safe. On Aug. 4, at approximately 4:08 PM, Redmond Police responded to a robbery inside the Target at 17700 NE 76th Street, where a theft suspect threatened security with pepper spray. Our Drone as First Responder (DFR) quickly arrived on the scene, providing live aerial footage to patrol units on the ground and directing them straight to the fleeing suspect. Because of this immediate eye in the sky, officers located and arrested the suspect within just 5 minutes of the initial 9-1-1 call. The suspect, who had fled to the nearby Home Depot, surrendered upon police arrival and was detained without further incident. Nearly $500 in stolen property was recovered. During a search of the suspect and his backpack, officers located the pepper spray used during the initial confrontation, an illegal spring-loaded knife, drug paraphernalia, and a container of suspected fentanyl. The Dallas Police Department’s new Drone as First Responder program officially launched today with eight remotely piloted drones based at Dallas Fire-Rescue stations across the City of Dallas. These drones are operated out of the Fusion/Real Time Crime Center and are designed to respond to calls for service in a two-mile radius from their base station. The base locations were selected based on heat maps of calls for service for both police and fire, placing them where they can potentially respond to the greatest number of calls. The pilots will be able to get to the scene quicker than in a squad car and begin to provide real-time intelligence and feedback to officers, as well as reduce the level of response or clear a call entirely if the incident has resolved. If a pilot sees a call in a drone’s response area where aerial intelligence can enhance officer safety, they can deploy a drone to provide critical updates to officers at the scene. Each drone is equipped with a thermal camera to help during nighttime operations, as well as a loudspeaker to make announcements to individuals on the ground. “I challenged our team to find innovative ways to continue improving our response times, and this new drone unit will not only keep officers free to respond to more calls, but provide real time updates as they are responding to calls,” said Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux. “Even during our training, our pilots were able to clear three holding calls in an hour with one drone. That alone proved their value to us, and I’m looking forward to seeing the benefits in both officer safety and response times.” Our public safety partners at Dallas Fire-Rescue will also be utilizing the Drone as First Responder program, with training for pilots underway. Under the new program, in the event of a reported structure fire, a drone will be dispatched to the scene ahead of arriving apparatus. This real-time aerial perspective will allow incident command to assess the size, scope, and intensity of a fire before firefighters even step off the apparatus. “Dallas Fire-Rescue is proud to collaborate with DPD on any initiative that will make our city safer,” said Justin Ball, Chief of Dallas Fire-Rescue. “By strategically docking the drones at our fire stations in high-demand areas, we are optimizing our response times and ensuring our tactics are more precise, while adding an extra layer of protection for the city.” This collaborative partnership between police and fire departments represents a major step forward in using smart-city technology to protect both residents and first responders.
