POV: You accept what you think is a free trip abroad, only to end up sentenced to life in a Chinese prison. In 2014, Chicago, Illinois, native Dawn Michelle Hunt, who was working as a receptionist, traveled to Hong Kong after being told she had won a contest. She later traveled to mainland China, where she was given luggage containing designer purses before being told she had won a trip to Australia. At the airport, Chinese authorities discovered drugs concealed inside the purses. Dawn was arrested and spent about three years awaiting trial. She was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve, which was later changed to life imprisonment. Dawn has maintained that she was deceived and did not knowingly transport the drugs. Her family has continued campaigning for her release. She has now spent more than 12 years imprisoned in China.

POV: The ground beneath your bed suddenly collapses, swallowing you whole while your brother desperately tries to save you. On February 28, 2013, 37-year-old Jeffrey “Jeff” Bush was in his bedroom in Seffner, Florida, when a sinkhole opened beneath his home, taking him and his bed underground. His brother, Jeremy, jumped into the hole to search for him but had to be rescued as the ground continued collapsing. Rescuers later abandoned the search because the site was too dangerous. Jeff’s body was never recovered. The house was demolished because of the danger, and the surrounding area was assessed for further ground instability. In August 2015, another sinkhole opened at the same location. The cause of the original collapse was never definitively established.

In 1948, an unidentified man was found dead on Somerton Beach in Adelaide, Australia. He had no identification, and the labels had been removed from his clothing. Police found a tiny piece of paper hidden in a pocket containing the words “Tamám Shud”, meaning “ended” or “finished.” The phrase came from a rare copy of The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám, which investigators eventually traced to a book found in a nearby car. For decades, nobody knew who the man was or why he had died. The mystery became one of Australia’s most famous unsolved cases. In 2022, researchers used DNA genealogy to identify him as Carl “Charles” Webb, a 43-year-old electrical engineer from Melbourne.

SHE WAS ONLY 8 YEARS OLD, AND THE K!LLER WAS SOMEONE HER FAMILY KNEW. THIS FOOTAGE WAS THE LAST TIME ANYONE EVER SAW HER. Sandra Cantu was an 8-year-old girl from Tracy, California, who disappeared on March 27, 2009, while playing near her home. Her disappearance sparked a massive search, with her family and community desperately hoping she would be found alive. Ten days later, her body was discovered inside a suitcase in an irrigation pond. The person responsible was Melissa Huckaby, a 28-year-old Sunday school teacher who lived in the same mobile-home park. Sandra was a playmate of Huckaby’s daughter. Investigators found evidence indicating that Sandra had been sxually assaulted before her dath. Huckaby was initially charged with s*xual offences, but those charges were dropped as part of her plea agreement. She was not convicted of those offences. The case shocked the community because the woman responsible was not a stranger who had approached Sandra on the street. She was someone living just steps away from the little girl’s home. In May 2010, Huckaby pleaded guilty to first-degree m*rder and kidnapping. She was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

POV: A six-year-old girl told people that her father’s girlfriend was mean to her, but before she could be protected, her life was taken by the very woman she feared. Bella Fontenelle, 6, lived in Harahan, Louisiana, and was cared for by her father’s girlfriend, Bunnak “Hannah” Landon. Bella’s teachers noticed changes in her behaviour, including anxiety and frequent crying. She had also expressed concerns about Landon during counselling. On April 25, 2023, Landon k!lled Bella while caring for her at her father’s home. Surveillance footage later showed Landon transporting a bucket containing Bella’s bod¥ in a wagon to the front lawn of Bella’s biological mother’s home. Bella’s body was discovered the following morning. Investigators recovered Landon’s buried cellphone, which contained evidence presented at trial. Messages also showed Landon telling Bella’s father that the children were in bed. Landon pleaded not guilty and argued that she was not criminally responsible because of her mental state. On May 1, 2025, a jury convicted her of first-degree murder and two counts of obstruction of justice. On May 6, 2025, Landon was sentenced to life in prison without parole, plus 80 years for the obstruction convictions. Bella was only six years old. Her death devastated her family, who must now live with the loss of a little girl whose life ended far too soon.

On November 16, 1999, 24-year-old Cherica Adams was driving home in Charlotte, North Carolina, after a date with her boyfriend, Rae Carruth, a wide receiver for the Carolina Panthers. Carruth was driving ahead of her when another car pulled alongside Cherica’s BMW. A gunman opened fire, sh•oting her four times. Despite her injuries, Cherica managed to call 911. During the call, she identified Carruth and explained what had happened. Doctors performed an emergency C-section to save her unborn son, Chancellor Lee Adams. He survived but suffered permanent brain damage and cerebral palsy after being deprived of oxygen. Cherica remained in a coma for nearly four weeks before dy!ng on December 14, 1999. She was just 24 years old. Prosecutors argued that Carruth had orchestrated the sh•oting to avoid paying child support. He was convicted of conspiracy to commit murd€r and other charges in January 2001, although he was acquitted of first-degree murd€r. He was sentenced to more than 18 years in prison and was released in October 2018. Chancellor was raised by his maternal grandmother, Saundra Adams, who devoted herself to caring for him. In November 2024, 62-year-old Stephanie “Stevi-D” Dowell went to Mule Creek State Prison in California to visit her husband, David Brinson. Brinson was serving four consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole after being convicted of murdering four men. Stephanie had married him while he was incarcerated, and the two maintained their relationship through prison visits. During an overnight family visit on November 13, Stephanie was found unresponsive inside the prison. She was pronounced dead shortly afterward. Months later, the coroner determined that she had been strangled and ruled her death a homicide. Stephanie’s family was devastated by her death. They questioned how she could have been placed in a private overnight visit with Brinson despite his history of violent crimes. In August 2025, Brinson was charged with murder in connection with Stephanie’s death. At that point, he had not entered a plea.

A PASTOR FOUGHT TO GET A MURD£RER RELEASED FROM PRISON. YEARS LATER, THAT MAN MARRIED HIS DAUGHTER AND KILL£D HER FOUR CHILDREN. In 1991, Gregory Green was convicted of kiIling his pregnant wife, Tonya. He served about 16 years in prison. While Green was incarcerated, Detroit pastor Fred Harris advocated for his release. Harris wrote to Michigan’s parole board, describing Green as a former member of his church who had taken responsibility for what he had done. Harris said that if Green were released, his church community would help him readjust to life outside prison. Green was released on parole in 2008. About two years later, he married Faith Harris, Pastor Fred Harris’s daughter. Faith already had two children, Chadney, 19, and Kara, 17. She and Green later had two daughters together, Koi, 5, and Kaleigh, 4. By 2016, Faith had filed for divorce. On September 21, 2016, Green kilIed all four children. Faith survived the attack. The man Pastor Harris had once described as someone who deserved another chance had ultimately become his son-in-law and the father of his grandchildren. He received 47 to 102 years in prison in 2017 after pleading guilty to killing four children. Because of his earlier murder conviction, the sentence was structured so that he would not be eligible for parole until he was approximately 97 years old.

In 1996, 16-year-old Travis Lewis was convicted of killing Sally Snowden McKay and her nephew, Joseph “Lee” Baker, at the Snowden family property in Horseshoe Lake, Arkansas. He was sentenced to 28½ years in prison and was released on parole in 2018. Sally’s daughter, Martha McKay, had chosen to forgive Lewis. While he was in prison, she befriended him and supported his release. After he was paroled, she even hired him to work at the historic Snowden House. Then, on March 25, 2020, 63-year-old Martha was found dead inside the same historic property. Authorities identified Lewis, then 39, as the suspect. Deputies reportedly saw him fleeing the house. He escaped through an upstairs window, drove across the property, abandoned the vehicle when it became stuck, and fled into nearby Horseshoe Lake. He disappeared beneath the water and later died. The most disturbing part? The woman who had forgiven Lewis for killing her mother was allegedly killed by him 23 years later.

JORGE TORRES JR. CASE: THE 42-YEAR-OLD FATHER WHO D!ED AFTER HIS GIRLFRIEND ZIPPED HIM INSIDE A SUITCASE AND LEFT HIM THERE OVERNIGHT. On February 23, 2020, 42-year-old Jorge Torres Jr. and his girlfriend, Sarah Boone, were drinking wine at their apartment in Winter Park, Florida. According to Boone, they were playing hide-and-seek when they jokingly decided that Jorge should climb inside a suitcase. She zipped him inside. However, investigators later discovered two videos recorded on Boone's phone that completely changed the case. In the recordings, Jorge could be heard repeatedly calling Sarah's name and pleading with her to let him out. He told her he couldn't breathe. Rather than helping him, Sarah mocked him, laughed and made comments referencing alleged past domestic abuse and infidelity. She eventually went upstairs and went to sleep, leaving him inside the suitcase. The following morning, she discovered that Jorge was unresponsive. She contacted her ex-husband before eventually calling 911 on February 24. An autopsy determined that Jorge d!ed from asphyxiation. Investigators also documented bruises, scratches and other injuries. During her trial, Sarah claimed she had suffered years of domestic abuse and argued that she feared what Jorge might do if he got out of the suitcase. Her defence argued that she had acted in self-defence. However, prosecutors argued that she deliberately left him trapped despite knowing he was struggling to breathe. On October 25, 2024, a jury found Sarah Boone guilty of second-degree murd£r after approximately 90 minutes of deliberation. On December 2, 2024, she was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
