The conflict in #Gaza has severely impacted the health system, leaving North Gaza with almost no functional health facilities. Since October 2023, World Health Organization (WHO) has documented 75 attacks on Kamal Adwan Hospital, 63 on Al-Awda Hospital, and 28 on Indonesian Hospital, resulting in severe damage and destruction to all three facilities. Kamal Adwan and Indonesian hospitals are currently non-functional, while restoration efforts are underway at Al-Awda Hospital. As part of its 60-day plan, WHO is scaling-up efforts to support early recovery and rebuild Gaza's health system, focusing on restoring essential health services and making hospitals operational.

Hostilities in the #Gaza Strip have sharply intensified since last night, leaving many dead and displaced overnight. The surge in violence is placing even greater strain on hospitals already overwhelmed by critical shortages and high patient loads. This week, WHO in occupied Palestinian territory Representative visited Al-Shifa Hospital, where the 50-bed emergency department is routinely receiving around 500 patients—a tenfold overcapacity. Without urgent resupply, more patients will suffer and die needlessly. This is preventable. Let aid in. Protect health care. Ceasefire.

The ceasefire in #Gaza brings hope, but immense challenges lie ahead to restore the health system. World Health Organization (WHO) is ready to scale up the response together with United Nations health partners including United NationsFPA, United NationsICEF, United NationsRWA and 67 Health Cluster partner. However, it is critical that the security obstacles hindering operations are removed. WHO will need conditions on the ground that allow systematic access to the population across Gaza enabling the influx of aid via all possible borders and routes. WHO calls on all parties to uphold their commitment to fully implement the #ceasefire agreement and to continue working towards a political solution to address the protracted crisis in the occupied Palestinian territory, which is essential for lasting peace. Last week, with World Health Organization (WHO) support, Al-Kheir Hospital in Khan Younis #Gaza became functional again, after being forced out of service following attacks in February 2024. With this, Gaza now has 7 operational stabilization centres providing a total of 70 inpatient beds for the treatment of malnutrition. WHO supported the rehabilitation of Al-Kheir Hospital by restoring water, sanitation, power and structural systems, and by supplying essential medical equipment and medicines. Thanks to the generous support of the 🇦🇪UAE through the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives مبادرات محمد بن راشد آل مكتوم العالمية, WHO also equipped Al-Kheir and five other stabilization centres with furniture, including patient beds and examination beds, to support operations.

Paralyzed for life over a bag of flour. Muhammad, 21, was shot and left quadriplegic while trying to collect food for his family at a non-UN distribution site. He is one of over 5,100 people who have reportedly suffered severe injuries while seeking food in #Gaza. An estimated 780 people have reportedly been killed, most near non-UN food distribution sites. Injuries like his are pushing the already crippled health system closer to collapse. No one should have to risk their life to get food or humanitarian aid. World Health Organization (WHO) calls for the protection of civilians and health care, and for entry of food, fuel, and health aid at scale through all possible routes. #CeasefireNow

Destruction of Al-Shifa Hospital - #Gaza's largest health facility - has ripped the heart out of the health system. Only 10/36 hospitals remain partially functional. Left without vital health care, ultimately it's civilians who will pay the price. We repeat: health must not be militarized or attacked. Ceasefire!

Ten children have reportedly died from hypothermia in #Gaza since the onset of winter. As cold temperatures and heavy rains intensify, children and families sheltering in poorly insulated, makeshift structures face extreme exposure, with little protection from the elements. Winter conditions, combined with severe overcrowding and inadequate water and sanitation, are increasing the risk of disease outbreaks. Acute respiratory infections are rising, alongside a growing number of severe cases requiring ICU admission. World Health Organization (WHO) continues to support health facilities with essential medicines and equipment. In addition, with support from AFD_en 🇫🇷 🇪🇺 and مبادرات محمد بن راشد آل مكتوم العالمية, WHO will provide blankets, warm hats for newborns, and thermal “survival” blankets to protect patients from the cold. WHO reiterates its calls for sustained and unimpeded access across the Gaza Strip, and for the timely entry of essential medical supplies and equipment, as well as winterization and shelter materials — all of which are critical to saving lives.
