That time I asked Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell about the Grateful Dead during a Financial Services Committee hearing… and yes — he really is a Deadhead. I’m sharing this as a fun throwback, but also because we’re in a very dangerous moment when the independence of the Federal Reserve is under attack. Powell led the Fed through some of the toughest monetary decisions in decades, and independent, non-political monetary policy is essential for a stable economy. Now he’s facing a bullshit criminal investigation because he refused to do Trump’s bidding. Let’s be clear: attacking the chair of the Federal Reserve over interest-rate decisions is bad for markets, bad for families trying to buy homes or find jobs, and bad for the rule of law. I spent a lot of time with Powell in Congress and found him to be thoughtful, hardworking, and serious about doing what’s right. You can easily see that in this clip. Plus, I like anyone who likes the Grateful Dead and he’s a good dude who’s been a fan for 50 years. Again, undermining the independence of the Fed is very dangerous — and it puts our entire economy at risk. We need to keep that Deadhead where he is.
