One of the most humbling upper body lifts and probably adds more value to one’s overall upper body development that isn’t recognized enough by most lifters. The OHP will build your horizontal pressing greater than the bench press will build your strength in pressing overhead.

Young kids, especially girls, are better off banging out confident sets of 10 at 45 lbs than sets of 5 push ups at RPE 10 looking like the worm. This is Hadley’s second training session, the bench press offers a great entry point for progressive loading the upper body.

I don’t lift for health benefits—if you love lifting, you’re past that. Saying that lifting very heavy while letting technique drift doesn’t raise injury risk is a bad take. Pushing the edge of physical capacity carries risk, and that risk is part of the appeal. It is a hobby.
