#Tuberculosis was introduced to buffalo in the 1950s by dairy cattle that lived next to Kruger National Park, South Africa. At the time, there were no fences, allowing buffalo and cattle to share feed and water sources. The disease was first detected in a buffalo in 1991. Over time, tuberculosis spread to various other species within the park, affecting predators, scavengers, antelope, and eventually spreading into wildlife populations in neighbouring Zimbabwe and Mozambique. This case highlights how human actions, such as industrial farming, can impact wildlife health and conservation. Livestock can present unique risks to nearby wildlife. How can we prevent such disease spillovers in the future?
