We talk about colonialism like it only came in one language and one skin color. But North Africa didn’t magically become Arab. Iraq didn’t magically become Muslim. Afghanistan didn’t magically stop being Buddhist. Islam spread through empire, conquest, and forced cultural erasure just like every other empire. If that makes you uncomfortable… good. Universities often claim to value inclusion, but too often that inclusion stops at ideas. An event with Jewish, Muslim, Christian, Arab, Asian and Hindu students was deemed “unsafe” not because of threats or hostility, but because someone spoke from a perspective that challenged prevailing beliefs. Universities should be places where students learn to engage with complexity, not avoid it, where diversity of thought should be welcomed. There are 57 Muslim countries with distinct cultures that are erased and replaced with hijab. The hijab is not “cultural clothing.” Women in Islamic countries are forced to shroud their bodies and their personalities in the name of religion. It has nothing to do with culture. This idea that “all Muslims share a culture" is a lie told by those who want to replace diversity, free thought, and free expression in the Muslim world with a monolithic oppressive Islam. People in the Middle East fight to escape Islamist movements. People in the West defend them from a safe distance. George Clooney can talk casually on daytime television about the Muslim Brotherhood because he has never had to live under them. There is nothing progressive about supporting movements that people elsewhere are risking their lives to escape. It shouldn’t be shocking that parts of the left align with radical Islam. It has happened over and over again, and it has always ended in blood. In Iran, those who helped bring the regime to power later disappeared once they were no longer useful. That’s the playbook.

Arabic is my first language and to be condescended to by non-Muslims or converts to Islam who do not speak Arabic, trying to tell me what the word ‘daraba’ means is beyond infuriating. Any Arabic speaker anywhere in the world is familiar with this world as it is commonly used daily. It means ‘to hit/ to beat’. Allah instructed men in Quran 4:34 to beat wives who they fear might be arrogant or disobedient. Twisting yourself around into a pretzel trying to deny this, because you are ashamed, is futile and only proves that your moral compass is better tuned than Allah’s.

No matter what I was willing to endure - the niqab, the toxic marriage, the unimaginable physical abuse - my daughter was where I drew the line.
