Did you know? Women currently hold less than 5% of seats in Nigeria’s National Assembly. The Reserved Seats for Women Bill proposes a game-changing amendment: adding dedicated seats for women across federal and state legislatures; temporarily, for 16 years; to level the playing field and unlock equitable representation. It is important to note that there are currently three Bills before the House, all seeking to establish reserved seats for women’s representation in the National Assembly. Two of these Bills propose one reserved seat in the Senate and two in the House of Representatives, while the third Bill seeks one reserved seat each in both chambers. The third bill, which proposes one reserved seat in each chamber of the National Assembly, has been adopted by all parties as the consensus bill driving the push for reserved seats for women. With champions like the Honourable Speaker Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen PhD GCON and Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu CON, leading the charge, and support from UN Women, EU, Gender Mobile and civic organizations, the momentum is building and change is on the horizon. Now, it’s your turn.
