A large group of “feral” youths were seen jumping barriers and pushing past staff at Southend Victoria train station after returning from visiting the seafront. The incident happened on Thursday evening, May 28, and has sparked calls for more British Transport Police officers at Southend Victoria and other stations across Essex. The railway union RMT said the situation was “feral, unpredictable and could have escalated quickly”. The group were seen forcing their way through the station’s ticket barriers, with Greater Anglia staff standing by as they pushed past staff. Security officers employed by Greater Anglia were present, but appeared not to challenge the group, seemingly due to the number of youths involved. The RMT is now raising concerns about the lack of British Transport Police officers available to help protect railway staff and passengers. Kathy Mazur, RMT regional organiser, said the situation was “totally unacceptable” and said there were “no BTP officers in sight”. She said visible patrols can make stations safer, pointing to BTP evening patrols at Kings Cross and St Pancras in autumn 2025, where RMT says staff assaults dropped by 59%, violence by 21%, public-order incidents by 41% and shoplifting by 25%. The BTP said that just after 7pm on Thursday 28 May, officers on duty in Southend had been diverted to an emergency incident at Laindon station, where they arrested a man on suspicion of assault and took witness statements. RMT has also criticised a three-year British Transport Police Authority funding plan approved in December 2025, which the union says could lead to frontline staff reductions in 2028/29. The incident has sparked debate about fare evasion, station safety and the pressure placed on railway staff when large groups gather without police officers immediately present.

Police quickly and robustly dealt with small incidents of anti-social behaviour on Bank Holiday Monday on Southend seafront - demonstrating their no-tolerance approach. Today officers are once again patrolling the seafront, as well as key areas around train stations in Southend, as a “significant number” of young people plan travel to Southend seafront for a beach party. The gathering has been widely promoted on social media, encouraging people to bring their own drinks. Event posters also claim laughing gas and marijuana will be available for sale. Concerns have also been raised after images circulated allegedly showing youths planning to bring weapons to Southend. Essex Police have confirmed officers will be using a range of powers across the city today to manage any issues, including dispersal orders and enhanced stop and search. Police may also use Section 60AA powers, allowing officers to require face coverings to be removed where they believe they are being used to conceal identity. A spokesperson for Essex Police said: “We want to be clear: Southend is a safe and welcoming place. It is not a place for violence, disorder or anti-social behaviour. Anyone coming here intending to commit crime will be dealt with swiftly and robustly. “You will see a significant and highly visible policing presence across the city, supported by live facial recognition technology, to identify those wanted for offences or who pose a risk to public safety. “We are working closely with British Transport Police, Southend City Council, community safety teams and CCTV operators to monitor activity, share intelligence and respond quickly to any emerging issues. “We expect the vast majority of people to enjoy the seafront responsibly. However, those who do not should expect to be identified, stopped and, where appropriate, arrested.”

Road Rage on Southend roundabout: A driver almost caused a collision when they failed to give way to another car on a roundabout. It happened at the busy roundabout next to Garon Park and the Southurch McDonalds. Kerry meek said: “I was already on the roundabout, going straight for the second exit, when suddenly, this car yeets in front of me. Brave. Bold. Unnecessary. “He slams his brakes like his brain just remembered The Highway Code exists, then starts posturing like he’s the main character and I’ve interrupted his audition tape. Pulled out, slammed on, got aggressive… and somehow he still believed I was in the wrong. “Now, I’m no expert, but I’m fairly sure give way to the right implies, aka the person already on the roundabout… meaning me." Kerry added: “All I wanted was the universal driver handshake: hand up, ‘oops!’ or a nod… and we both carry on like emotionally stable motorists.” “It’s a roundabout, not Fight Club: 2. Yet somehow, he still tried to invite me ‘round the corner’ for a fight. We all make mistakes. Just own it, wave a hand, apologise, and move on, my guy. Some of us are apparently action movie characters trapped in a Ford Focus. “So for Christmas this year, I’d like to nominate him to receive a copy of The Highway Code, some humility and maybe some proper driving lessons.”

This video reveals what appears to be sewage flowing into water on Southend seafront. The footage was captured on Sunday. The area of darker coloured water was spotted by a man in an aircraft who labelled it “disgraceful”. Mark Hutley said: “I’ve never seen anything like it. It could be seen for miles.” It was spotted between Chalkwell beach and Westcliff beach. The apparent sewage spill is close to one of Anglian Water’s ‘storm overflow’ pipes that leads into the water from the land. Latest records indicate that it was active on Sunday 8 September and emptying into the area of the Thames Estuary for a period of time. Anglian Water have a permit from the Environment Agency to operate the storm overflow pipe, which specifies conditions for controlled sewage and stormwater spills during heavy rainfall. This is in order to prevent flooding in homes and businesses when the sewer network becomes overloaded with rainwater.

More people became stuck in the dangerous “quick sand” at the closed Three Shells Lagoon in Southend, despite fencing and warning signs already being in place. The latest incident happened on Friday, raising fresh safety concerns. According to witnesses, a family were climbing on the rocks when a child slipped off and into the wet sand. While they managed to get free, two women who tried to help quickly became trapped themselves. Barry French, who witnessed what happened, said: “One kid fell off the rocks and into the wet sand. They were okay, but both the women then got stuck and their kids were screaming hysterically. “Access to the rocks or the whole area needs to be blocked off.” The area on the beach had already been fenced off, with warnings in place about the danger of the ‘wet sand’. Southend City Council previously confirmed that the lagoon had effectively been closed, due to previous incidents of people becoming trapped in the quick sand. The £1.9 million lagoon, which first opened in 2016, will not reopen until safety improvements are made. A council spokesperson said: “In the meantime, our engineers are looking at a range of options for the lagoon. “Any options are likely to require planning applications and coastal licensing approvals.” Despite this, Friday’s incident shows people are still getting into the restricted area, with growing calls from locals for stronger measures to prevent access altogether.
