Police carried out a major operation across Southend yesterday to prevent disorder after large groups of youths travelled to the seafront for a beach party promoted online. Large numbers of officers were deployed across the city, including at key train stations, where police intercepted and dispersed around 250 people as soon as they arrived. While a sizeable crowd did still gather along the seafront, officers were already in position and monitored the situation throughout the day before gradually dispersing the group. The operation was launched following concerns over reports of weapons being brought into the city, alongside the potential for disorder due to the scale of the gathering. Police used dispersal orders, enhanced stop and search powers, CCTV monitoring and support from community safety partners to target anyone travelling to Southend to commit crime or cause disorder. Officers carried out 29 stop and searches under additional Section 60 and 60AA powers. Nine arrests were made linked to the gathering, including one for possession of a bladed article. Essex Police also confirmed some arrests were assisted by Live Facial Recognition technology. Essex Police said: “We want to be clear: Southend is a safe and welcoming place. It is not a place for violence, disorder or anti-social behaviour. Anyone coming here intending to commit crime will be dealt with swiftly and robustly.”

This is the moment alleged scrap metal thieves were caught red-handed in Southend. Scrap metal theft has been an ongoing issue across parts of the UK for years, particularly as the value of metals like copper, aluminium, lead and steel can quickly add up when sold on to scrap yards. While some people assume scrap left outside is “free to take”, entering somebody’s driveway or property and removing items without permission can still amount to theft.

Rival football fans clashed in Southend High Street today, ahead of the ‘Essex derby’ between Southend United and Braintree Town. Police rushed in and formed a line to keep the two groups apart after disorder broke out, with cans reportedly thrown before officers stepped in and pushed supporters back in opposite directions. Some Braintree fans were then seen trying to regroup and head back towards Southend supporters at the top of the High Street, as police worked to keep things under control. Ahead of the match, officers had already warned fans about behaviour around the derby. Chief Inspector Dave Browning said: “We’ll be there to make sure you can enjoy the game safely… officers will deal with anyone causing disorder.”

EXCLUSIVE: This new video shows the machete fight on Southend seafront continuing for a longer period, with the gang members trying to attack each other with the huge knives. The gang were undeterred by nearby security officers or families enjoying the warm weather by the seaside. The gang members eventually ran off in different directions. Armed police were dispatched and later made a number of arrests. Essex Police say they seized SEVEN weapons during last night's disorder. Southend Councillor Matt Dent said: "The scenes in Southend City Centre yesterday evening were horrifying. I have serious questions around the apparent lack of police and actions taken based off available intelligence. To be clear, this is unacceptable, and we need as a city to make sure it doesn't happen again."

More people became stuck in the dangerous “quick sand” at the closed Three Shells Lagoon in Southend, despite fencing and warning signs already being in place. The latest incident happened on Friday, raising fresh safety concerns. According to witnesses, a family were climbing on the rocks when a child slipped off and into the wet sand. While they managed to get free, two women who tried to help quickly became trapped themselves. Barry French, who witnessed what happened, said: “One kid fell off the rocks and into the wet sand. They were okay, but both the women then got stuck and their kids were screaming hysterically. “Access to the rocks or the whole area needs to be blocked off.” The area on the beach had already been fenced off, with warnings in place about the danger of the ‘wet sand’. Southend City Council previously confirmed that the lagoon had effectively been closed, due to previous incidents of people becoming trapped in the quick sand. The £1.9 million lagoon, which first opened in 2016, will not reopen until safety improvements are made. A council spokesperson said: “In the meantime, our engineers are looking at a range of options for the lagoon. “Any options are likely to require planning applications and coastal licensing approvals.” Despite this, Friday’s incident shows people are still getting into the restricted area, with growing calls from locals for stronger measures to prevent access altogether.
