With Nowhere Else to Turn, Niger Begs Nigeria for Fuel Amid Severe Shortages By: Zagazola Makama For nearly two weeks, Niger Republic has been crippled by a severe fuel crisis, bringing vehicular movement and economic activity to a grinding halt. Long queues stretched across cities, with desperate motorists and businesses struggling to obtain a few liters of petrol. The situation was so dire that the military junta, which once prided itself on rejecting external influence, had no choice but to swallow its pride and turn to Nigeria for help. Despite months of hostile rhetoric and diplomatic friction, Niger’s rulers quietly dispatched their Minister of Petroleum and Renewable Energy, along with top officials from the Niger Petroleum Company (SONIDEP), to beg Abuja for urgent fuel supplies. Nigeria, ever the regional big brother, obliged, approving the immediate delivery of 300 fuel trucks across the border to Niamey. Niger’s fuel crisis didn’t happen overnight. It was the direct consequence of a disastrous confrontation between the ruling junta and Chinese oil companies, which have long dominated Niger’s petroleum sector. The trouble began in March 2024, when China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) granted the Nigerien government a $400 million advance, using future crude oil deliveries as collateral. This deal was meant to help Niger cope with the crippling economic sanctions imposed by ECOWAS following the July 2023 coup. However, when it came time to repay the debt, the junta found itself strapped for cash. Rather than negotiating, the military rulers decided to strong-arm China. In a move that stunned industry insiders, they slapped an $80 billion tax demand on SORAZ (Zinder Refinery Company) despite the state-owned Sonidep already owing SORAZ a staggering $250 billion. When China refused to provide additional loans, the junta retaliated by expelling Chinese oil executives from the country and seizing SORAZ’s bank accounts. A Self-Inflicted Crisis This reckless decision backfired almost immediately. Niger’s entire petroleum sector which is heavily reliant on Chinese expertise and investment began to collapse. The SORAZ refinery, the lifeline of Niger’s fuel supply, ground to a halt, and fuel shortages spread like wildfire. This crisis could not have come at a worse time. The Niger-Benin oil pipeline, a project designed to boost Niger’s crude exports to 100,000 barrels per day by 2025, was also at risk. With Chinese engineers gone and no viable alternative in place, the junta’s decision plunged the country into economic uncertainty. Turning to Nigeria for Help For weeks, the military leadership refused to acknowledge the crisis publicly. State-controlled media was ordered to stay silent about the fuel shortage and the growing unrest among Nigeriens, who were forced to buy petrol at sky-high black-market prices. But as the situation worsened, the junta had no choice but to seek external help even if it meant approaching Nigeria, the very country they had repeatedly criticized since the coup. Without any public announcement, Niger quietly sent a delegation to Abuja, appealing for an emergency fuel supply. The irony was lost on no one this was the same junta that had openly defied ECOWAS sanctions, severed ties with France and the West, and aligned itself with Russia. Yet when faced with economic collapse, it was Nigeria that they turned to for salvation. Nigeria Plays the Good Neighbor Again Despite months of insults, false accusations, name calling, diplomatic snubs, and hostility, Nigeria once again stepped in to help. It was gathered that the Nigerian Government approved the release of 300 fuel trucks, which immediately began crossing into Niger to ease the crisis.

Residents Repel Bandit Attack in Sokoto, Neutralise One Assailant By: Zagazola Makama Residents of Achida community in Wurno Local Government Area of Sokoto State have successfully repelled a bandit attack, in what has been described as a rare display of coordinated community self-defence. Security and local sources said the incident occurred when armed bandits stormed the community, but were met with stiff resistance from residents and local vigilante groups who mobilised quickly to confront the attackers. The villagers reportedly engaged the assailants directly, forcing them to retreat after a brief confrontation. During the encounter, one of the suspected bandits was neutralised by the community defence group, while others fled with possible injuries. The sources commended the courage and unity of the residents, particularly the vigilante members, for their swift response in defending their community against the attack. Security authorities are expected to continue patrols and follow-up operations in the area to prevent further incidents and track fleeing suspects. DEFENCE HQ NIGERIA Nigerian Army

Ammunition falls from moving vehicle near ABU Zaria, eyewitnesses suspect supplies for bandits By: Zagazola Makama Passersby and students of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria were startled on Tuesday when several rounds of ammunition reportedly fell from a moving passenger bus along the Zaria–Katsina highway. Zagazola Makama understand that the incident occurred directly in front of ABU Zaria’s main gate, causing brief panic among pedestrians and motorists. One of the witnesses, who simply identified himself as Musa, said the ammunition fell from a commercial vehicle heading towards Katsina. “We suddenly saw the bullets drop from the bus as it sped past the gate. Before people could understand what happened, the vehicle had already disappeared,” he said. He added that some bystanders quickly gathered the ammunition and alerted security operatives stationed around the area. Another eyewitness, a student who preferred not to be named, described the incident as “strange and frightening,” noting that many feared the ammunition could be linked to supplies to armed groups operating in parts of Kaduna and Katsina States. Security personnel later arrived at the scene and recovered the ammunition. DEFENCE HQ NIGERIA Nigerian Army

Over 50 fighters reportedly killed as Boko Haram factions clash with ISWAP in Abadam, By: Zagazola Makama A deadly clash between the factions of Boko Haram the Jamā’at Ahl as-Sunna lid-Da‘wa wa’l-Jihād (JAS) and the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) has resulted in the reported death of more than 50 fighters at Toumbun Gini, an island community in Abadam Local Government Area of Borno State. Security sources told Zagazola Makama that the clash occurred on Sunday afternoon around 3 pm, following an attempted offensive by ISWAP fighters. According to the source, ISWAP mobilised fighters using 10 high-powered watercraft and launched an attack aimed at reclaiming the island, believed to have recently fallen under the control of the rival JAS faction. However, intelligence reportedly reached JAS leadership ahead of the assault, enabling them to set up a counter-ambush. At exactly 1500 hours, ISWAP boats landed and what was planned as a surprise offensive quickly turned into a deadly trap. The first shots were decisive. JAS fighters overpowered them within minutes. ISWAP was routed,” the source said. The source said over 50 ISWAP fighters were killed during the ambush, with seven of their boats seized. The remaining three vessels escaped with casualties. Video clips appearing to show the aftermath of the clash surfaced online on Sunday. Zagazola described the clash as Day 5 of intensified rivalry between the two insurgent factions, which have been fighting over territorial dominance and control of resources in the Lake Chad islands. The continued push by JAS against ISWAP could force surviving ISWAP fighters deeper into mainland communities bordering Kukawa, Monguno and Marte LGAs, increasing security risks for civilians and security personnel. The rivalry has however, weakened both factions, reducing their ability to launch coordinated large-scale attacks. However, this fragmentation also poses a different challenge: smaller, unpredictable cells that are harder to track. What is happening on Lake Chad today is a conflict within a conflict and Nigerian troops remain in the middle of the battlefield. The fighting could be leveraged strategically by intensifying pressure on both groups simultaneously. “This is the best time for the Nigerian military to tighten the corridor and deny both factions space to regroup,”said Zagazola. Fact check: viral video claiming bandit attack in makarfi, Kaduna is misleading Abuja, March 9 A viral video circulating on social media claiming that bandits are currently attacking Makarfi Local Government Area of Kaduna State has been found to be misleading and falsely represented, security checks have revealed. The video, which is being widely shared with captions suggesting an ongoing attack in Makarfi near Zaria, shows scenes of heavy gunfire accompanied by a voice-over describing troops repelling armed attackers. However, a careful review of the footage and audio has confirmed that the voice narration in the video was lifted from a previous military engagement involving troops of Operation Hadin Kai in the Timbuktu Triangle in Borno State, where soldiers were repelling an attack by fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in January 2026. Recently, there has been concern over a growing trend in which individuals deliberately recycle old combat footage or unrelated security incidents to fabricate fresh attacks, particularly on social media platforms where such content spreads rapidly. Zagazola noted that the audio commentary does not correspond with any current security situation in Makarfi, and the material has been deliberately recycled and repackaged to create panic among residents. This is a classic case of disinformation where old operational clips are taken out of context and falsely presented as a fresh attack. Such deliberate manipulation of security-related content is dangerous, as it spreads fear, misleads the public, and can undermine ongoing security operations. The practice is reckless and irresponsible. Those who knowingly circulate such false claims are contributing to psychological warfare of the terrorists aimed at creating panic among civilians. The general public have therefore been advised to verify security-related information through credible sources before sharing, and to avoid amplifying unverified videos or claims that could fuel unnecessary tension. Man Arrested for Brutal Assault on Schoolgirl Over Mango Theft in Maiduguri By: Zagazola Makama A man identified as Mamman Shettima Baba has been arrested for brutally beating a young schoolgirl for plucking mangoes from a compound in the Pompomari Housing Estate of Maiduguri. The incident, captured on video and circulated widely on social media, showed Shettima Baba repeatedly flogging the girl with a thick stick while his wife recorded the assault, encouraging him to “beat her more.” According to eyewitnesses, the girl and her friends were on their way home from school when they noticed an open gate with a mango tree inside. Acting on youthful curiosity, they entered the compound and picked some mangoes. However, some Almajiri children caught one of the girls and handed her over to the woman residing in the house. She, in turn, ordered her husband to violently punish the child. The Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) responded swiftly to the viral video and arrested the suspect. The Commandant of the Corps, Abdulrazaq Haroon, confirmed the arrest and added that during preliminary investigations, Shettima Baba confessed to the assault, justifying his actions by claiming that students had been persistently plucking mangoes from his tree. The brutality of the attack, however, has sparked public outrage, with legal practitioners, child rights activists, and government officials demanding strict legal action against the suspect. In response to the attack, Hamza Nuhu Dantani, a legal practitioner, has petitioned the Borno State Commissioner of Police, calling for the immediate arrest and prosecution of the suspect. The petition outlines charges of culpable homicide, assault, criminal intimidation, and causing grievous hurt, citing violations of the Borno State Penal Code Law, 2023. It also accuses the suspect of attempted homicide and calls for: The immediate arrest and prosecution of Shettima Baba. A full investigation to identify and prosecute any accomplices. Medical and psychological support for the traumatized young victim. A public warning against violence and abuse of minors. Meanwhile, The Borno State Commissioner of Education, Lawan Abbah Wakilbe, and the Commissioner of Justice have both assured the public that justice will be served. Wakilbe gave the assurance when he visited the NSCSC command and commend the officers for the swift intervention. My take; Despite public outcry and legal provisions protecting minors, cases of human rights abuses in Borno State often fail to reach their logical conclusion. Many perpetrators walk free due to political influence, connections with high-ranking officials, or social stigma that discourages victims from seeking justice. In several past cases, suspects were released without trial, while victims or their families were pressured into withdrawing complaints. The culture of impunity surrounding child abuse, domestic violence, and police brutality in the state has raised concerns about the effectiveness of the legal system in holding offenders accountable. Observers are closely watching how this latest case will be handled, as many believe it could set a precedent for future human rights cases in the state. Troops arrest teenage iswap logistics courier in ngamdu, link suspect to Jilli strikes By: Zagazola Makama Troops of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) have arrested a 15-year-old suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) logistics courier in Ngamdu, Borno, linking him to recent terrorist attacks and ongoing military airstrikes on insurgent enclaves in the Jilli axis. Security sources told Zagazola Makama that the suspect, identified as Tijjani, was apprehended on Sunday while allegedly attempting to procure logistics for insurgent fighters operating within the Ngamdu–Benisheik corridor. According to the sources, the suspect confessed during preliminary interrogation that he participated in the attacks on Benisheik and Ngamdu carried out on Thursday. “My name is Tijjani, I am 15 years old. I was arrested today in Ngamdu. I was among the terrorists that attacked Benisheik and Ngamdu,” the source quoted him as saying. He reportedly disclosed that the group mobilised from Jilli, a known insurgent stronghold in Gubio Local Government Area, before executing the attacks and subsequently returned to the enclave. “Before the attack we came from Jilli and returned there after the attack,” he said. The suspect further revealed that he was redeployed from Jilli on Saturday with the sum of N850,000 to procure supplies for other fighters. “I was sent from Jilli yesterday with N850,000 to collect some logistics from Ngamdu, but I was arrested by troops,” he reportedly stated. He added that he left behind other fighters at the Jilli enclave but could not confirm their fate following the recent military airstrikes on the area. “I left my colleagues at Jilli yesterday. I don’t know what has happened to them there,” he said. Military sources said the arrest of the suspect provides further insight into the operational and logistics network of ISWAP within the region, particularly the central role of Jilli as a staging ground and supply hub. The development comes barely 24 hours after the Air Component of OPHK conducted precision airstrikes on the Jilli axis, destroying a major terrorist logistics base and neutralising scores of insurgents. The strikes, which followed sustained Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions, targeted a convergence of motorcycles and vehicles identified as belonging to insurgents and their logistics handlers. Field reports indicated that at least two motorcycles and one vehicle were destroyed, while several terrorists were killed in the operation. Some insurgents were said to have taken cover upon hearing the approaching aircraft but later returned in the evening to evacuate casualties. Military authorities have consistently described Jilli as a “no man’s land” under insurgent control, where activities such as the so-called weekly market serve as logistics and coordination points for terrorist operations. The arrest of the teenage suspect, who admitted to moving funds and facilitating supplies, underscores the reliance of insurgent groups on logistics couriers, including minors, to sustain their operations. Security experts say disrupting such supply chains is critical to weakening the operational capacity of insurgent groups in the North-East. The military has reiterated its commitment to sustaining pressure on terrorist enclaves through coordinated air and ground operations, aimed at dismantling logistics networks and preventing further attacks on both security forces and civilian communities. Investigations into the suspect’s activities and possible accomplices are ongoing.

Fearless to the End: The Heroic Last Stand of Lt. Col. Alari and His Troops in the Timbuktu Triangle By: Zagazola Makama In the unforgiving terrain of the Timbuktu Triangle, where the desert meets destiny, a battle of immense ferocity unfolded. It was here that Lt. Col. Thomas Ebisingha Alari and his troops of the 19 Battalion, 199 Battalion, and 149 Battalion made their heroic last stand against the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists, pushing back wave after wave of insurgents before paying the ultimate price. The exclusive footage obtained by Zagazola reveals the raw intensity of the confrontation. a demonstration to the courage of soldiers who stood their ground against overwhelming odds. Before the encounter that claimed their commander’s life, the troops had already eliminated over 70 terrorist combatants, including three notorious commanders: TALHA, a ruthless special forces leader; Mallam Umar, and Abu Yazeed, another Fiye (Commanding Officer). It was a battle fought with unyielding resolve. As the terrorists launched a massive assault, deploying a Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Device (VBIED) to breach the military’s defenses, the troops fought back fiercely. The explosion shook the battlefield, but the soldiers held their ground, raining fire on the enemy with precision and determination. The terrorists were hard saying “Amaliya and scampering for safety after a bomb was lunched in their location, which killed some of them. Lt. Col. Alari was no ordinary commander. He was a warrior, a leader who fought side by side with his men, never retreating, never faltering. Even as the battle raged and the odds stacked against them, he remained resolute, rallying his troops with unwavering bravery. Like a Spartan in his final stand, he refused to yield. He fought until his last breath, ensuring that his men had done what they could to repel the terrorists before he fell in the heat of combat. His death was not in vain. His sacrifice, and that of his fellow soldiers, ensured that the terrorists suffered devastating losses. This is the unspoken reality of those who defend Nigeria. The footage tells a story beyond words the sheer grit, the sacrifice, and the undying patriotism of troops who face death daily so that others can live in peace. Today, we honor Lt. Col. Alari and the fallen warriors who stood their ground in the Timbuktu Triangle. Their legacy is carved in the history of Nigeria’s fight against terrorism. a legacy of courage, honor, and sacrifice. Mob Justice in Edo: 16 Innocent Travelers Killed Over False Accusations By: Zagazola Makama In a harrowing display of mob injustice, 16 innocent travelers from Northern Nigeria lost their lives in the Udune Efandion community of Uromi, Edo State, after being falsely accused of kidnapping. This unfathomable tragedy unfolded on Thursday, as an irate mob took the law into their own hands, fueled by false claims and sheer ignorance. Intelligence sources told Zagazola Makama that the victims, primarily Hausa hunters, were en route from Port Harcourt to Kano for the Sallah festivities when they were intercepted around 1:30 p.m. by members of the Edo State Security Corps and local vigilantes. The sight of their hunting guns. Dane guns commonly used in the North was misinterpreted as a threat. Instead of contacting the police, or other security agencies, local vigilantes raised a false alarm, which ignited a wave of chaos and violence. The reaction was swift and brutal. Local youths, incited by the unfounded accusations, viciously attacked the travelers, resulting in the tragic loss of 16 lives on the spot. In a grotesque act of barbarism, the mob set the truck ablaze, leaving some bodies trapped inside the vehicle. While some people were taken out on wheelbarrow and thrown inside fire. This gruesome scene only point to the sickening reality of mob justice that has taken root in certain communities. Responsive action from security operatives came too late for the victims. By the time they arrived on the scene following a distress call, the damage had been done. Four survivors were rescued and rushed to His Grace Hospital in Uromi for urgent medical treatment. Meanwhile, authorities have confirmed the arrest of five suspects, but is this enough? A mere handful of arrests cannot bring back those lost, nor can it alleviate the trauma inflicted on the surviving families. The Hausa community in Uromi held an emergency peace meeting to address the situation and aims to prevent any further reprisals, yet questions linger. Will justice truly be served? The police, responsible for maintaining law and order, have vowed that "the law must take its course" and that those responsible for these heinous acts will be brought to justice. But how can trust be restored when justice is often delayed or never served? Public outrage at this incident is palpable, with cries for accountability ringing out across the nation. Many have called for urgent legal action against those involved, as well as heightened public awareness regarding the dangers of mob violence. The specter of extrajudicial killings looms large, threatening national unity and stoking the flames of ethnic tension. Observers and community leaders implore the authorities to enhance law enforcement and improve intelligence sharing among security agencies to prevent such a horrific tragedy from happening again. When will this cycle of violence end? It is high time that justice is prioritized, and those who resort to mob action are held accountable for their barbarity. In this dark chapter of Nigerian history, the need for a collective commitment to justice and peace has never been more urgent. The lives lost demand justice, and the survivors deserve the assurance that they can live without fear of becoming victims of false accusations and mob brutality. Zagazola Dismantles Masara Kim’s False “Jihadist Burial Attack” Narrative in Plateau By: Zagazola Makama The latest international media appearance by Plateau-based activist, Masara Kim Usman, has once again exposed how misinformation, emotional propaganda and outright fabrication are being weaponised to inflame Plateau’s communal crisis and falsely portray it as an “Islamic jihadist war” against Christians. In his now-circulating interview, Masara claimed that armed Fulani jihadists attacked a burial ground during funeral rites in Barkin Ladi while mourners were burying victims of earlier attacks. According to him, gunmen opened fire from surrounding hills, forcing locals to abandon proper burial rites and hurriedly dump corpses into shallow graves before fleeing for their lives. He further claimed he personally witnessed someone being shot during the attack and that armed terrorists carrying sophisticated weapons and sniper rifles attempted to massacre mourners. But there is one major problem with the entire dramatic story: absolutely nobody was killed or injured during the so-called burial attack. Not one casualty, no one corpse, not one hospital record, not one medical or security report from multiple security agencies and not one single verified victim, except him. The obvious question therefore remains if hundreds of armed “Fulani jihadists” attacked a crowded burial ceremony with sophisticated rifles and sniper weapons as claimed by Mr Masara, how did nobody die? How did nobody sustain injury? How does a “mass attack” end without a single casualty? The answer is simple, because the narrative was fabricated and staged to create panic, attract sympathy and push a false genocide narrative to international audiences. Even Masara’s own videos exposed the inconsistencies.

VIDEO: Military Air precision bombardment neutralises over 50 terrorists after attack on Ngoshe in Borno By: Zagazola Makama The Air Component of Operation Hadin Kai has neutralised over 50 suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists following precision air strikes on their withdrawal routes after a failed attack on Ngoshe in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno. Sources told Zagazola Makama that the officer said the terrorists had, at about 7:30 p.m. on March 3, launched a coordinated assault on artillery positions in Ngoshe, a community located about 12 kilometres from Pulka and 31 kilometres from Gwoza town. “The insurgents attempted to overrun the artillery positions in a surprise evening attack. Troops on ground responded effectively but conducted a tactical withdrawal under intense fire to preserve personnel and equipment while reinforcements were being mobilised,” he said. The sources explained that the insurgents had adopted a hit-and-withdraw tactic, abandoning the scene before reinforcement troops fully secured the area. The sources added that additional troops were immediately deployed, while surveillance platforms tracked the fleeing terrorists along identified withdrawal corridors. “Upon receipt of real-time intelligence from ground troops, the surveillance aircraft were scrambled to engage the terrorists on their egress routes. The terrorists were sighted moving in clusters in both locations. “Precision bombardment was conducted on confirmed target clusters and movement trails. Battle Damage Assessment indicates that over 50 terrorists were neutralised in two separate strike runs,” the officer said. “The air-ground synergy under Operation Hadin Kai ensured that although the terrorists attempted to escape into forested enclaves, they were decisively engaged from the air. “The strikes also disrupted their logistics and mobility capability within the Ngoshe–Pulka corridor,” he said. The sources further stated that clearance and area domination operations were ongoing to forestall any regrouping attempts by the insurgents. He noted that the Ngoshe–Gwoza axis remains a historically volatile corridor due to intermittent activities of Boko Haram and ISWAP remnants exploiting difficult terrain and proximity to cross-border forest zones. “Operation Hadin Kai remains resolute in sustaining offensive pressure. The message is clear any attempt to attack our positions will attract overwhelming and coordinated firepower,” he said. He assured residents of Gwoza and surrounding communities of the military’s commitment to protecting lives, supporting resettlement efforts, and consolidating gains recorded in the ongoing counter-insurgency campaign in Borno. Police, security sources dismiss alleged attack at Plateau burial ceremony By: Zagazola Makama The Plateau State Police Command has dismissed reports alleging that gunmen attacked mourners during a burial ceremony in the state, describing the claims as false and misleading. The command’s position corroborated earlier security reports by counter-insurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, which questioned the authenticity of viral videos and claims circulating on social media regarding the incident. In a statement issued on Tuesday in Jos, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Alfred Alabo, said no attack was recorded during the burial ceremony. According to him, the event was conducted under strict security supervision, with the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), police personnel and other security agencies present throughout the ceremony. “The claims are grossly exaggerated, inaccurate, and do not reflect the true situation on the ground,” the statement said. The police added that the burial was carried out peacefully without any external attack as alleged in some reports. Earlier, Zagazola Makama had also disputed the viral claims, alleging that the video being circulated was misleading and appeared to have been recorded by individuals within the gathering. According to the report, armed youths suspected to be members of local vigilante groups were seen firing gunshots within the burial ground during the procession, raising concerns over the proliferation of small arms among civilians. The report questioned how some of the youths gained access to firearms, including pistols and other weapons allegedly seen in the footage. Security sources said authorities were examining the circumstances surrounding the display and use of weapons at the gathering. Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Plateau, CP Bassey Ewah, has reinforced security in the area by deploying additional personnel, including mobile policemen, to prevent any breakdown of law and order. The police urged the public to disregard unverified reports capable of inciting panic and advised media organisations and social media users to verify sensitive security-related information before dissemination. The command reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the state.

Fresh Chadian Offensive Forces ISWAP/Boko Haram Fighters to Flee Lake Chad Shores By: Zagazola Makama A fresh military offensive by Chadian forces in the Lake Chad Basin has triggered a mass displacement of Boko Haram terrorists and their families from the Tunbuns and adjoining island settlements toward parts of northern Borno, security and local sources have disclosed. The development followed days of intense aerial bombardments and coordinated ground assaults launched by the Chadian military against suspected Boko Haram and ISWAP enclaves in the Lake Chad region after deadly attacks on Chadian troops earlier this month. Sources told Zagazola Makama on Tuesday that large numbers of insurgents, accompanied by women and children, were seen moving across border routes from the Tunbuns toward Kangarwa and surrounding settlements. Kangarwa is located about 14 to 15 kilometres from Kukawa in northern Borno. The sources said the fleeing insurgents were escaping sustained bombardments by Chadian air assets targeting known terrorist camps and logistics bases located within the marshlands and islands around the Lake Chad fringes. According to the sources, there are growing fears that some of the displaced fighters may attempt to regroup within established enclaves around Doro Naira, Wula Wula, Njemina, Tunbun Gini, Tunbun Rago and Tunbun Shanu in Borno state. The sources stressed the need for intensified military operations within the Kukawa, Baga, Gudumbali and Malam Fatori axis to prevent the insurgents from integrating into existing cells operating within Nigerian territory. The latest offensive is believed to be directly linked to recent deadly attacks carried out by insurgents against Chadian troops in the Lac Province area of Chad. Security sources said insurgents linked to the Bakura-led faction of Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad (JAS) attacked Chadian military positions at Ngaboua and Chukuntale, known collectively as the Barka Tolorom axis, between May 4 and May 6. According to the sources, the first attack occurred on May 4 at about 10 p.m. when insurgents stormed a Chadian military base at Ngaboua and reportedly overran the position.
