Genetically, the two Bronze Age individuals from Aigyrzhal (Narasimhan et al., 2019) show admixture from Central Asian farmers, Afanasievo-related groups, and ANE-rich populations. Individual I11527 carried Y-DNA J2a1a1b2a1a1 and mtDNA HV14, while I11526 carried Y-DNA Q1b2a1a and mtDNA R6a2. The Aigyrzhal population of Naryn (2200–1900 BC) was described as asthenic, dark-haired, long-headed, and narrow-faced, with sharply profiled features resembling the Mediterranean type. These traits are attributed to a variant of the Southeuropid type, which likely originated in southern Eurasia (Kitov, 2015). At that time, Central Asia lay within a contact zone between Protoeuropoid populations from the west and north and Southeuropid (Mediterranean) populations from the southwest. While Afanasievo and Yamnaya show strong shared Europeoid features, Srubnaya, Andronovo (Fedorovo), and later Alakul populations display varying degrees of Southeuropid influence (Solodovnikov, 2014). Anthropologically and chronologically, the closest parallels to the Aigyrzhal individuals are populations of the Bactrian–Margiana Archaeological Complex (BMAC) from ancient Margiana (2300–1800 BC). Similarities include physical type and burial posture (crouched on the right side, head to the north) (Sarianidi, 2005; Klein, 2007; Dubova et al., 2017). Although Aigyrzhal features architectural elements that could suggest southern influence, the lack of grave goods (except two ocher-stained pebbles) limits firm conclusions. Alternatively, the long-headed, narrow-faced Europeoid type may derive from pre-Andronovo local populations, with possible indirect connections to Eneolithic Afanasievo groups, where ocher burials are also present. These links likely reflect shared ancestry or transitional populations rather than direct continuity (Dremov, 1997; Kiryushin & Solodovnikov, 2010; Khokhlov et al., 2016; Abdykanova, 2019).show more

Check out this Stereo4D paper from Google DeepMind. It's... a pretty clever approach to a persistent problem in computer vision -- getting good training data for how things move in 3D. The key insight is using VR180 videos -- those stereo fisheye videos we launched back in 2017 for YouTubeVR. It was always clear that structured stereo datasets would be valuable for computer vision -- and we launched some powerful VR tools with it back in 2017 (link below). But what's the game changer now in 2024 is the scale -- they're providing 110K high quality clips :-) That's the kind of massive, real-world AI dataset that was just a dream back then! They're using it to train this model called DynaDUSt3R that can predict both 3D structure and motion from video frames. Which means it tracks how objects move between frames while simultaneously reconstructing their 3D shape. And given we're dealing with real stereoscopic content, results are notably better than synthetic data, giving you a faithful rendition of the real-world with a diverse set of subject matter. It's one of those through lines when tackling a timeless mission like mapping the world or spatial computing -- VR content created for immersion becoming the foundation for teaching machines to understand how the world moves.
