Peggy lived alone at the end of Hawthorn Lane,... and the only one who really kept an eye on her was a big black Doberman named Bear. People in the neighborhood used to cross the street when they saw him. He looked like the kind of dog you read about in the wrong kind of story, all muscle and sharp ears. But anybody who actually knew Peggy knew that Bear followed her around the house like a shadow and slept on the floor beside her bed every night. Peggy was 79 and stubborn about living on her own. Her son had been after her for a year to move somewhere with people around, and she kept telling him she was fine, that she had Bear and that was plenty. One morning in the kitchen, she reached up for a mug on the top shelf and her legs just went out from under her. She came down hard on the tile and couldn't get herself back up. Her phone was on the counter, way out of reach, and the house was dead quiet except for her own breathing. Bear was at her side before she even finished falling. He nosed at her face and pressed against her, and when she told him to go, he ran to the front window and started barking, the deep kind the whole street could hear. He wouldn't stop, going from the window to Peggy and back again, over and over, until a neighbor two doors down finally came out to see what all the noise was about. She found Peggy on the floor and Bear standing guard over her, and she had the ambulance there within minutes. Peggy came home a week later with a cracked hip and a new respect for that dog. She still won't hear a word about moving. She says she already lives with somebody who looks out tor her.show more

These dogs are a living, breathing testament to the... impact of our field conservation work. 20 years ago, when we started working in the Northern Area of Tsavo East National Park, it was rare to see a single African wild dog. They are vulnerable to snares, human-wildlife conflict, and disease, and illegal activities in the area had taken their toll on the species. In partnership with the Kenya Wildlife Service, we started extensive anti-poaching work in the Northern Area, installing teams in the landscape and conducting regular ground and aerial patrols. By removing snares and reducing threats across the ecosystem, we helped create an environment where the dogs could rebound. Two decades later, the Northern Area is home to several healthy African wild dog packs. This one has about 16 members, and another nearby pack numbers around 40. To go from barely a single sighting to packs numbering in the dozens is a wonderful testament to how our anti-poaching efforts are paying off. At 9:52 a.m. Saturday, the FDNY received a report... of a fire at 132-17 41st Road in Queens. Upon arrival, units encountered two buildings fully involved in fire with extension to a third building. "Our engine companies moved in with multiple handlines in all of these buildings—very aggressively, very deliberately," Chief of Fire Operations Kevin Woods said. "Many lives are saved by the proper positioning of hoselines." With a report of people trapped, members from Rescue 4 got above the fire on the second floor of the main fire building and rescued an occupant. They made the rescue under high heat and in zero visibility without the protection of a hoseline. There was a total of 21 injuries—17 firefighters and two EMS members suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Two civilians were also injured and transported to area hospitals. More than 250 firefighters and EMS members responded to the 5-alarm fire, which was placed under control at 1:47 p.m. The cause remains under investigation.show more

A 22-year-old woman, an IIT graduate and the daughter... of a senior bureaucrat, was found dead at her home in southeast Delhi's East of Kailash area. Police said she was raped before being strangled to death with a phone charger. She was alone at home at the time of the incident. There were no signs of forced entry. Police have arrested a 19-year-old domestic help, Rahul, who had worked at the house and was dismissed over a month ago. "Investigations revealed that he used to play online games and would borrow money from other servants in the vicinity, or from domestic staff working in nearby households, without ever repaying them. This is why he was fired," Joint Commissioner of Police Vijay Kumar said. He was arrested from a hotel in the Dwarka area, where he had been hiding. He is being charged with rape, murder and robbery, police said. Rahul was seen in CCTV footage leaving the victim's residence at 6:28 am, police said. According to police, the woman was found by her family members inside the house under suspicious circumstances, after which the authorities were alerted. The victim had completed her schooling at DPS RK Puram and later graduated from IIT Delhi. She was preparing for the UPSC examination. She was also a dancer and had won several awards in dance competitions. Her elder brother holds a senior position in a multinational company, and her mother is a doctor. When police reached Rahul's residence in Alwar, they found that he had previously been involved in a sexual harassment case. Police said the accused arrived in Delhi from Alwar the previous night and is suspected to have entered the house using a spare key. A sensational theft has come to light in #Bengaluru’s... #Marathahalli area, where gold, diamonds, silver, and cash worth ₹18 crore were stolen from the residence of builder Shivakumar in #Yamaluru. The accused are a couple who had joined the house as domestic workers just 20 days earlier, police said. The robbery took place on January 25, when no family members were present at the house. Shivakumar was on a foreign trip to the Philippines with friends, while his wife, son, and daughter-in-law had gone to a relative’s house. When the family returned, they found the lockers broken and valuables missing, bringing the crime to light. Police identified the accused as Dinesh and Kamala, a couple who had joined the household recently. Kamala worked as a house help, while Dinesh was employed as a security guard. Within a short span of 20 days, they gained the family’s trust by efficiently handling all assigned duties. Before their arrival, another couple, Vikas and Maya, who had worked at the house for nine months, had expressed their intention to leave for their native place. Shivakumar had asked them to arrange replacements before leaving, following which Dinesh and Kamala were hired. According to police, Kamala deliberately took the other house help outside on the pretext of going out. As soon as they left, Dinesh became active and reportedly called five to six accomplices to the house. The gang first switched off the UPS system and then broke open lockers located in bedrooms on the ground floor and first floor. The accused fled with 11.5 kg of gold, diamond jewellery, 5 kg of silver, and ₹11.5 lakh in cash, amounting to a total value of ₹18 crore. Police suspect the involvement of a Nepali gang, indicating that the crime was carried out with careful planning. Just before 12:30 Monday afternoon, the FDNY responded to... a 4-alarm fire at 44-49 College Point Boulevard in Queens. Tragically, four people lost their lives in this fire. Two other victims were transported to area hospitals in critical condition. During operations, a stairwell collapsed, trapping two of our members. They were transported to area hospitals in stable condition. More than 230 firefighters and EMS personnel responded. “This is a difficult and tragic day. There were several victims in this fire. The Fire Department did an extraordinary job under difficult circumstances, putting this fire out and saving people. I can't thank them enough for their continued efforts and commitment to life safety,” said Fire Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore. “Upon arrival, we had heavy fire on all three floors of this building. There was a victim trapped on the second floor, which our members removed with a portable ladder. As our engine companies were moving in from the first floor and up the stairs to the second floor, the stairs collapsed, and those two members were trapped in the stairs. With additional help, we were able to extricate those members. As all that is happening, other members are performing CPR on the victims in the street,” said Chief of Fire Operations Kevin Woods. Guildhouse was broken into and burglarized… …and it may... surprise many to know it was the 3rd burglary of 2024 and our 8th since we opened. These are not stats we are proud to be sharing, and in the past Guildhouse has not publicized these events for fear of inviting more theft. But this one was by far the most devastating, and it’s the reason Guildhouse has only been accepting credit cards for the previous 2 weeks. We’ve decided to share our experience this time because keeping quiet is clearly not working. On March 26 shortly after midnight, these clowns (pictured) used tools to cut through a sealed back door from the construction site behind Guildhouse. They then broke down the office door and stole our entire safe, along with various other property. For those unaware, small businesses like ours operate on very thin margins. Guildhouse in particular puts our mission of creating “a home away from home for the gaming community” above maximizing profit, striving to keep prices low and limiting the highly profitable events that otherwise interfere with gaming. Many of our fellow Downtown SJ businesses have also experienced the heartache and frustration of break-ins and burglary; the lowlifes who commit these crimes are too rarely held accountable. Despite the crime, we are determined to continue bringing our dream to life in #DTSJ and hope to work with SJ Downtown Association, City of San José and San José Police Media Relations to make meaningful safety upgrades to SoFA District. My husband and I decided to open our hearts... to a 10-and-a-half-year-old dog. We weren't looking to adopt another dog, but when we learned that she had spent three months at the shelter without a single visitor or adoption inquiry, we couldn't bear the thought of her growing old and passing away alone. Although she wasn't with a rescue organization, her story was shared widely throughout the animal rescue community. She was incredibly gentle and sweet, and the shelter volunteers adored her. They loved her so much that they often let her spend time with them in the office instead of leaving her alone in her kennel. The day after we heard about her, we went to meet her. The moment we saw her, we knew we couldn't walk away. When we brought her home, she was covered in ticks. Helping her recover wasn't easy. We made countless trips to the veterinarian, patiently tried different treatments, and devoted a great deal of time to her care. There were moments when it felt overwhelming, but we never regretted our decision. All we wanted was for her to spend the rest of her life surrounded by love. In the end, we received the greatest gift of all. She stayed with us for three more wonderful years before peacefully passing away at 13 and a half years old, an impressive age for a dog. She brought so much joy into our family and will always hold a special place in our hearts. Facial reconstruction of a 7,000-year-old woman from Skateholm Skateholm... is a site in southern Sweden, 20 km from Trelleborg, where the remains of Mesolithic hunter-gatherer dwellings have been found. These people fished, hunted wild boar and deer, and were already familiar with pottery. About 7,000 years ago, the settlement area consisted of islands in a shallow lagoon. Several centuries later, the water level rose to such an extent that the inhabitants were forced to relocate elsewhere. During excavations carried out between 1980 and 1985, archaeologists investigated three settlements as well as two adjacent cemeteries - Skateholm I (65 graves) and Skateholm II (22 graves). In addition to human burials, dog graves were also discovered. Dogs, like humans, were buried with grave goods such as flint tools and ornaments. The burials were made at a shallow depth (20-40 cm), usually without coffins, although some interments were in boats or hollowed-out logs. Both human and canine graves were covered with ochre. Some human skeletons bear traces of violence. Many of the graves are highly unusual, and it is believed that the burial process involved complex rituals; some researchers suggest that the deaths were planned, as a form of sacrifice. Other scholars argue that Skateholm served as a burial place for shamans, people who died in accidents, infants who died at birth, and other “dangerous” individuals. In one double burial, an elderly man and a young woman aged about 17–19 were placed closely together. It is believed they were buried at the same time. The woman’s skull shows damage to the left temple, possibly from a blow. Their relationship is uncertain, perhaps father and daughter, or husband and wife. In another case, a woman around 35 years old was buried in a seated position with a newborn child on her lap. Beads made from wild boar and elk teeth were placed with the burial. Elsewhere, a man approximately 60 years old and 4 year old child were found embracing each other, facing one another. The child had ornaments on the chest made of bear teeth and pieces of amber. One individual was buried lying face down, with arms and legs extended. It is thought that he may have been bound or wrapped. Several arrows had been shot into his back and legs, suggesting that those who buried him wanted to ensure he would not rise again. Another burial contained a dismembered man. A healed injury was visible on his femur, possibly caused by a wild boar attack, which would have left him limping. An arrowhead was lodged in the pelvic bone and was likely the cause of death. The right arm and left leg were missing. Since some bones were still in anatomical position, the dismemberment likely occurred while soft tissues were still intact. In a different burial, a woman was interred in a seated position with her legs extended. A dog was buried beside her, with its front paws resting on the woman’s legs.show more

The shelter manager stopped us right before we walked... into the kennel area and said quietly, “If you take the male out for a walk, don’t shut the door on the female. Then we saw them — two massive, long-haired German Shepherds pressed tightly together in a small kennel. Their names at the shelter were Rex and Luna. A volunteer gently shared their story. They had already been returned twice, not because they were aggressive — in fact, they were incredibly gentle and affectionate. The real issue was how strongly they were attached to each other. If one of them left the room, the other would cry and panic as if something terrible had happened. The shelter was running out of space and had started discussing the possibility of separating them permanently to make adoption easier… even though everyone knew it would devastate them. I stood there watching Rex carefully place his large chin across Luna’s back. Both dogs were shaking slightly, aware that people were studying them and deciding they were simply “too much.” My husband looked at me, then back at the two nervous dogs clinging to each other. He didn’t ask about the cost. He didn’t hesitate. He just walked over to the wall and picked up two leashes. “We’re not the kind of people who split up a family,” he said. So now our house is a little more chaotic. Our vet bills doubled, our bed barely belongs to us anymore, and 140 pounds of fluffy German Shepherds somehow manage to take up every inch of space. Last night, death visited our building. None of us... knew. At 1:40 a.m., a violent explosion tore us from our sleep. The blast ripped through the plastic sheeting covering our windows. The glass had been shattered long ago by previous airstrikes. Within seconds, windows flew open across the neighborhood. Faces emerged from the darkness as phone flashlights swept over the street like tiny stars trying to replace a sky that had abandoned us. Even the moon seemed to hide behind the clouds, unwilling to witness what had happened. We knew death had arrived. We just didn’t know whose door it had chosen. Some neighbors went downstairs. We stayed where we were, caught between the instinct to run and the fear of becoming the next target. Minutes later, ambulances arrived. They moved slowly through the streets before the paramedics stepped out and asked, “Where was the strike?” No one knew. The darkness had swallowed everything. After searching for nearly fifteen minutes, they drove away. We assumed they had found the victims. The next day, around noon, we learned the truth. The apartment that had been struck was in the very building where we are renting our home. A husband and wife had been killed just a few meters from us. Fun fact. Stoopee (the black one) wandered into our... house a week after our dog Watson passed. A month after we adopted him, he made sure to bring his friend from the street Lucy (the white one) by. We knew it would have to be both of them adopted together. Now during the day, whenever they sleep they like to be in each others eye line. At night, she sleeps in the bedroom and he makes sure to sleep in a bed right outside the bedroom door. Like he’s keeping watch on the three of us. We moved back to Mumbai exactly a year ago. With our two goa indies. We were so stressed about whether they would adapt. Strangely, the minute they got to the city, away from the street they lived on, it’s like they knew they were set for life. Because the reminder of the street they used to live on was gone, so they weren’t always on edge. They know now, Wherever we go, they know they are coming. Seeing them settle here, sleep 16 hours a day without a care in the world, is I think the greatest moment of this year for me. It’s been an amazing amazing blessing 🧿show more

The vet had been honest with the Hollands. Baxter... didn't have much time left, and the kindest thing they could do now was make whatever he had left count. So on a warm Saturday in June , instead of a normal quiet day at home, they loaded the old Bernese into the back of the van and drove him two hours to the coast. Baxter had never seen the ocean. He was 13, and his whole life had been the backyard and the same worn spot on the living room rug. The kids wanted him to see something big before he went. He moved slow getting out of the van. His back legs weren't what they used to be, and the boys had to help him down onto the sand. For a second he just stood there at the top of the beach, nose up, taking in all that salt air and open water like he couldn't quite believe it. Then something in him shifted. He started down toward the surf on his own, stiff and determined, the way he used to trot to the door when the kids came home from school. When the first cold wave washed over his paws, his whole face lit up. He didn't run, he couldn't, but he waded in up to his chest and stood in the shallow water with the sun going down behind him, and the whole family just watched. Nobody said much. They didn't need to. They stayed until the light was almost gone, taking pictures, letting Baxter rest against their legs, giving him one perfect afternoon to hold onto. The vet was right about the time. Baxter left them a few weeks later, at home, surrounded by the people who loved him. But he saw the ocean first. I grew up in the Middle East, I survived... both wars and our culture. It takes much more than a bunch of losers throwing an emotional tantrum to intimidate me. Harry Pettit 🇱🇧🇵🇸 is the teacher at Radboud University in Nijmegen who urged Dutch universities or the pro-Palestine mobs, to be specific, to give me “the warm welcome” I deserve, inciting the violence we witnessed today. Instead of teaching students to engage in dialogue, to challenge my position and try to understand why I identify as a recovered antisemite, he abused his position and acted as an anti-Israel activist leading a mob of angry, privileged, spoiled young men and women, most of which have never been to the Middle East and do not know the very basics about our region and the Arab-Israeli conflict. What I saw today on campus in Nijmegen is a display of moral bankruptcy, a despicable sense of entitlement and boiling frustration. A frustrated teacher who was previously arrested for his disruptive behavior could not cancel my events in the Netherlands. He came to the door and did not have the courage to come in. Instead he orchestrated a loud and aggressive protest outside and sent a few of his “disciples” to disrupt and be escorted out by the police risking their future being tainted with a criminal record. But who cares if Harry Pettit 🇱🇧🇵🇸 thinks they are heroes. In his (and their) world, I am a genocide apologist who was “sent off”. After my event, we were escorted by security and the police to prevent the pro-Palestine mob from lynching us. The innocent students who were “thrown to the ground” were trying to physically attack us and when they could not, they were punching and kicking the car, trying to open the doors, to get the driver out. They also jumped in front of the car to prevent us from leaving. If the police wasn’t there, what would they have done to us? "A little boy on a filthy mattress had already... learned to fear footsteps in the dark. By the time Deputy Mason Cole reached the back room, the child was clutching a dirty stuffed animal so tightly it looked like the toy was the only thing keeping him together. Neighbors had called after hearing a child crying inside a house that was supposed to be empty. The property had been in foreclosure for months, the power was cut, and the windows were boarded over. When Mason forced the door open, the smell hit him first. Trash covered the floor, and somewhere deeper in the house a thin, broken whimper kept rising through the silence. That sound led him down a narrow hallway to a cluttered bedroom in the back. Sitting on a stained mattress surrounded by snack wrappers was a 3 year old boy named Eli, his face streaked with dirt, his hair matted, and his whole body curled around that stuffed animal like it was a shield. One look at him told Mason this wasn't a child who had been left alone for an hour. Fear had sunk too deeply into him, and hunger had already pulled the strength out of his face. Later, the truth came together piece by piece. Eli’s mother was a severe addict who had broken into the empty house to squat, then walked out 3 days earlier to drink and get high and never came back. He stepped across the mess on the floor, climbed onto the dirty mattress, and lowered himself beside the trembling boy so he wouldn't feel another adult towering over him. “Hey. Hey. You’re okay.” Eli flinched at first and pulled the stuffed animal tighter against his chest. Tears filled his eyes when he looked up, and the words that came out were barely louder than a whisper. “I was scared.” Mason’s voice dropped even softer. “I know that. You’re safe now.” No answer came right away. Every muscle in the boy’s body stayed tight for another second, like he was waiting to find out whether those words were true. Mason wrapped an arm around him carefully and stayed still. “Believe me,” he said. “I’m not leaving.” Something shifted in that moment. Eli stopped curling away and leaned into the deputy’s chest instead, the fear finally breaking loose in a hard, shaking sob. A partner standing nearby caught the quiet scene for a second before they carried the boy out of the dark house and into the warm patrol car. Mason kept talking to him the whole time. “We’re going to get you warm. Get you something to eat. It’s okay.” A long breath caught in the boy’s throat before he cried again, smaller this time. In one of the #Bengaluru's biggest heists, domestic staff... allegedly decamped with gold, diamond and silver jewellery worth an estimated Rs 18 crore from a builder's residence at ASK Lake Garden on #Kempapura Main Road in #Yamaluru recently. The accused are a Nepalese couple identified as Dinesh (32) and his wife Kamala (25). According to the complaint filed by Shimanth S Arjun (28), a businessman, the theft occurred between 9 am and 12.30 pm on January 25. Arjun, son of MR Shivakumar, told #MarathahalliPolice that his family has been residing in the house for the past 19 years. His father Shivakumar, a builder, was out of town for work at the time of the incident. Dinesh and Kamala had joined as housekeepers about 20 days ago through acquaintances identified as Vikash and Maya Vishu. They were employed at the house along with cooks Siddharama and Ambika. On January 25, at around 9 am, the complainant, along with his wife and mother, left the house to attend his wife's land worship ceremony at H Cross on Hoskote-Chintamani Road. At around 12.38 pm the same day, Arjun received a call from the cook Ambika, who alerted him that cupboard locks had been broken and valuables stolen, allegedly by Dinesh and Kamala with the help of others. When the family rushed back, they found that a locker in the ground-floor bedroom had been broken open using an iron bar, with about 10 kg of gold and diamond ornaments stolen. Another locker in the first-floor bedroom was also found broken, from which around 1.5 kg of gold ornaments, about 5 kg of silver jewellery and Rs 11.5 lakh in cash were missing. In all, gold, diamond and silver ornaments and cash worth approximately Rs 18 crore were reported stolen. The complainant alleged that the couple had closely observed the movements of family members in advance. Police have registered a case under Section 306 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (theft by clerk or servant of property in possession of master). Efforts are on to nab the absconding couple. A senior police officer said the suspects had disconnected the power supply to disable CCTV cameras. The complainant further told police that the couple were replacements for regular domestic staff Vikash and Maya and had agreed to work for a monthly salary of Rs 27,000. Police intentionally ran over the suspect in Porterville, CA,... who shot and killed a California sheriff’s detective during a shootout on Thursday. Sheriff Mike Boudreaux bluntly said during a press conference, “We intentionally ran him over… Don’t shoot at cops. You shoot at cops, we’re going to run you over. He got run over. He got what he deserved.” The suspect, David Eric Morales, was killed when a law enforcement BearCat armored vehicle ran over him after he continued firing and refused to surrender. Morales was being served an eviction notice, after 35 days of not paying rent, and then opened fire on deputies in an apparent ambush that led to an hours-long standoff. Morales was barricaded in the home for hours while he fired on law enforcement. He eventually exited through a window and was later found outside, lying in brush while wearing camouflage, still a threat, and was subsequently run over. Deputy Randy Hoppert has been identified as the person Morales senselessly shot and killed during the gunfight. Hoppert was a Navy corpsman who served from 2010 to 2015 and joined the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office on Jan. 5, 2020. He was struck by gunfire and transported to Sierra View District Hospital, where he died at 11:57 a.m. Morales had allegedly ambushed the deputies, prompting a call for additional units. He shot at everything, including vehicles, officers, and even a drone. After Deputy Hoppert was gravely injured, the gloves came off and Morales eventually met his end under an armored vehicle. I have always loved tales of courage in the... face of long odds. Maybe that's why To Kill a Mockingbird has always been one of my favorite stories. In a world dominated by groupthink and mob rule, only one man had the courage to swim against the current. It was a world of suspicion, where rumors quietly whispered gave rise to groundless fears. I see parallels between that world and my own. Lucy sits in jail today as the mob kindles their torches and brandishes their pitchforks expecting a lynching, fueled by rumors fed by gossip and lies. She's a bit like Tom Robinson, the gentle black man falsely accused of having raped a white woman. It did not matter that he could not have done it physically. It fit the biases of a fearful society. Sometimes, even I have misunderstood Lucy. Years ago, we got three ducks. They seemed to bond with Lucy. They would sleep next to her and lay down pressed against her. Sometimes even on top of her. She endured it patiently. One day, we found one dead with what seemed to be bite marks on its back. Lucy was holding it in her mouth. Dolly Spice- Jones 🌱🎵 and I were shocked. We began to see her as a loose cannon; guardian and predator in equal measure. We kept her in the house the next few days. Soon another duck died, leaving only a pile of feathers. We observed the final moments of the third duck. Death came from the skies in the shape of an owl striking at dusk. We saw then that it had never been Lucy. Those were not bite marks. They were the marks of talons. Lucy must have come just too late. She was gently holding it because it had been her friend. She was sad. Sheepdogs are easily confused with wolves by the sheep. In reality, they are the only thing keeping the wolves from the sheep. Shortly after we moved here, a bear visited. We could see its footprints. It stayed out of our fields. Our sheepdogs guarded them diligently. The bear also didn't visit our neighbors' houses, where dogs, cats, and children may have been outside, oblivious to the danger that lurked nearby. Our barking dogs protected the neighborhood. One of the following days, it may have even been the next day, my wife got a text from a neighbor complaining about how the barking had made her hot tub less relaxing the previous night. Sheep don't understand sheepdogs. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Boo Radley was misunderstood. Horrific stories and childhood superstitions portrayed him as a monster. A boogeyman. He was neither.
