This was filmed last Tuesday at Animal Rescue in... Albuquerque, New Mexico. The man is Will Navarro. He's 38 years old. Marine Corps veteran. Served two tours. He's been in outpatient treatment for combat-related stress for the past two years. The dog is a four-year-old gray German Shepherd named Atlas. Atlas had been at Cornerstone for fourteen months. The file on his kennel was marked with a red warning label. Multiple volunteers had been unable to work with him. He growled at anyone who approached. Had snapped at a staff member during an early handling attempt. The rescue had quietly concluded that Atlas was unlikely to be placed and had been discussing next steps. Will's therapist, a woman named Dr. Okafor, had suggested animal-assisted interaction as part of his ongoing care. She'd contacted Cornerstone asking if they had any dogs who might benefit from calm, patient company. The rescue coordinator almost said no. Then thought of Atlas. She told Will's therapist exactly what Atlas was. Warned her it might not go anywhere. Dr. Okafor passed the information to Will and left the decision to him. Will showed up on a Tuesday morning. Looked at Atlas through the kennel door. Atlas growled. Will told the coordinator: "That's fine. Can I just sit in the room with him?" Staff brought Atlas into the meet room. Atlas went immediately to the far corner. Low growl. Hard eyes. Will sat down on the floor on the opposite side of the room. Didn't move toward Atlas. Didn't speak to him. Didn't make eye contact. Just sat. Thirty-five minutes passed. Atlas gradually stopped growling. Started watching instead of warning. After about fifty minutes, Atlas took a step forward. Then another. Then crossed the room slowly and stood in front of Will. Then leaned into him. Full body weight. Just leaned. Will put one hand gently on Atlas's back. That was all. The shelter coordinator watching through the window said she had to step away. Will told us afterward: "Atlas isn't dangerous. He's been overwhelmed for a long time and nobody slowed down enough to let him decide when he was ready. I know what that feels like. You're not dangerous. You're just not okay yet." Will applied to adopt Atlas before he left that afternoon. The rescue approved the application the same day. Unanimously. Without discussion. Atlas went home with Will on Thursday. Dr. Okafor said: "I referred Will because I thought the interaction might help him. I didn't expect him to walk out with a dog who's been labeled unadoptable for over a year. Cartwheel Robotics is one of my favourite humanoids... they're... building for homes, not warehouses – focusing on intangible 'companionship' rather than quantifiable 'work.' 🤖 This lowers the bar: It's not measured by productivity or ROI. No brutal cost-per-task calculations. No frustration when it fails at a job. Success is simply: do people like it? Does it make them feel something? 🎨 The design choice: Deliberately cartoon-styled to avoid the uncanny valley. Friendly and approachable, not creepy. Warmth and personality over capability. 💣 The challenge: Making something people genuinely connect with is can be harder than optimising for tasks – there's no playbook, no clear definition of done. But founder Scott LaValley (ex-Boston Dynamics, Disney – led Baby Groot, worked on Atlas) has exactly the right background. He knows how to make robots that resonate. 🎯 If they get this right, there could be a bigger moat than approaches that focus on doing 'work'... This is Disney's strategy. The 2nd World Humanoid Robot Games opened today in... Beijing, and a world record has already been set. The Lightning robot, developed by smartphone maker Honor, ran 100 meters in 9.32 seconds, beating Usain Bolt's human record of 9.58 seconds. A total of 2,056 humanoid robots from 666 teams are participating in the games, competing in various real-world tasks and athletic events, such as house cleaning, firefighting, soccer, running, boxing, and more. Comment from me: Artificial intelligence is the foundation of future technological and environmental development. Today, we can see that two global centers have emerged in terms of the number of data centers, AI infrastructure, and the integration of AI into industrial and humanoid robotics: the United States, along with Japan and South Korea, and China. Russia is not an independent center and is lagging far behind the leaders, having squandered all its potential in the war. Europe is currently following the US lead, but it is already developing its own AI structures and semiconductor strategy, changing regulations, and investing hundreds of billions in technological autonomy, and it could become the third global center.show more

🚨 BREAKING: Walden Robotics has just come out of... stealth with $300 million in funding and a $1.1 billion valuation. Another unicorn in the robotics space. 🦄 Just 6 months after incubation. The company was spun out of Toyota's robotics research lab by co-founder Russ Tedrake, a former Toyota Research Institute executive and MIT professor who taught a course on robotic legs. The seed round was co-led by Deviation Capital and Toyota, with participation from: NVIDIA, Boeing, Samsung Ventures, CoreWeave Ventures and AE Ventures. The robot is already working. A pilot is live at a North American Toyota factory where a Walden humanoid is pulling eight-hour shifts alongside human workers, loading and unloading car parts, cleaning machinery, kitting for assembly. A shift. Every day. Walden builds its own hardware, software and AI models, designed to continuously learn and improve in real production environments. Tedrake's words on the opportunity are worth noting: "Everyone recognises the magnitude of the opportunity and the technology feels ready, but success is not assured. You have to think through the business case, the unit economics, and how to marry the best of manufacturing and logistics with disruptive AI technology." Rare honesty in a space full of hype. I think we've both been inspired by each other's work and dedication to exploring all the ways we can push these tools to their limits for VFX and animation. We didn't want to force a collaboration, but recently, Jboogx was inspired by the work I've been doing and how I incorporate myself into my animations. This idea is a playful take on 'Atlas carrying the boulder,' but with a twist—let's make Atlas out of spaghetti and the boulder a meatball, to fit more with what Jboogx has been doing on the food side of things lately (shoutout to our good friend James Gerde -@gerdegotit @gerdedoesit @gerdemadeit, who did the first spaghetti animation). Since I was going to record myself, it wouldn't have been right if Jboogx didn't as well! This is just a taste of what’s possible. I'm located in Germany, and Jboogx is in Hawaii. I love it when a retail store design incorporates... inspiration from its surrounding location. Kudos to Checkers in Franschhoek for this superb design. A beautiful shopping experience and they have a Starbucks too. Woolworths next door has also incorporated the essence of the area with an entrance covered in hanging grape vines and a generous wine selection from the local farms in the area. Considering the store size, the number of wines on offer is impressive. There’s no doubt that safe, leafy suburbs are becoming the suburbs of choice for South Africans. Office workers are securing office space closer to home and therefore more community shopping centres and store upgrades are coming up closer to home. The Winelands has exceptional demand for housing at the moment and even more so for secure, industrial sites. With very limited warehouse space in the Paarl, Stellenbosch, Wellington, Klapmuts and Simondium areas - there is an opportunity for commercial landlords to develop industrial parks that offer micro-units as well as security. There is also an opportunity for the storage players in the industrial sector to develop within the area. With so much space and plenty of farms, I can only see commercial opportunities for office, retail and warehousing in the Winelands.show more

I spent a month in Shenzhen visiting factories and... robotics companies, and the contrast with the U.S. was striking. While Figure and Boston Dynamics hide their humanoids behind closed doors, Chinese companies have massive showrooms open to the public. But what really stood out wasn't just the transparency, it was how good they are at selling. Take UBTech: they've already sold 1,200 humanoid units at $200k each to factories. And here's the kicker, these robots aren't even that useful yet. They can only pick up and drop boxes at 1/10th the speed of a human, and factories still need to hire system integrators to train them for specific tasks. My theory is that these factories are terrified of getting left behind in the robotics/AI wave. They're investing in new tech not because it's ready, but because they can't afford to wait. The second surprise was the breadth of their robotics portfolio. These companies aren't just building humanoids, they're deploying service robots everywhere: restaurants, hotels, apartments. Consumer robots are cleaning houses, pools, pet waste, dishes. They're covering the entire spectrum. But the education piece shocked me most. I picked up what I thought was a high school or college robotics textbook, it was for primary school. The government mandated AI and robotics education starting in elementary school. Almost every single school in China now has AI and robotics curriculum, complete with education robots so kids can learn by building. They're creating a generation that grows up fluent in robotics and AI. China owns the supply chain and the hardware stack. But here's what I think people are missing: the race isn't just about who can build robots faster or cheaper. The U.S. advantage has always been in the layer between hardware and human, the interaction design, the software intelligence, the intuitive interfaces that make complex technology feel natural. China is building the physical infrastructure, but they're also learning fast. Every deployed service robot, every classroom full of kids building with education kits, every factory running humanoids, that's all data collection at scale. The window for the U.S. to establish its wedge is narrowing. It's not enough to be better at AI or software anymore. We need to be building the integration layer, the intelligence that makes physical AI actually useful, not just impressive in a showroom. Because right now, China isn't just manufacturing robots. They're manufacturing a robotics-native culture, and that might be the most defensible moat of all.show more
