I was so nervous to finally see her that I called her name a few times, and she immediately turned to greet me with the warmest smile. After the photo session, she waved goodbye to our group and gently patted my shoulder. I could feel that she was truly sorry for not having more time to spend with us before the shoot. Even though there were many people around, Nong Orm gave her all during the 1v20 photoshoot. We weren't looking to adopt another dog, but when we learned that she had spent three months at the shelter without a single visitor or adoption inquiry, we couldn't bear the thought of her growing old and passing away alone. Although she wasn't with a rescue organization, her story was shared widely throughout the animal rescue community. She was incredibly gentle and sweet, and the shelter volunteers adored her. They loved her so much that they often let her spend time with them in the office instead of leaving her alone in her kennel. The day after we heard about her, we went to meet her. The moment we saw her, we knew we couldn't walk away. When we brought her home, she was covered in ticks. Helping her recover wasn't easy. We made countless trips to the veterinarian, patiently tried different treatments, and devoted a great deal of time to her care. There were moments when it felt overwhelming, but we never regretted our decision. All we wanted was for her to spend the rest of her life surrounded by love. My son just went through this a couple of years ago and they did not hire most of the drivers over to the new company. Many people told her not to quit, to stick it out and to go apply with the new company asap. She said if they don’t hire her it is just wasted time in getting a new job. She’s upset because she feels it is disrespectful of her company not to let them know personally and give them time to find a new job. I wouldn’t make matters worse. She needs the money. Saturday is my mom’s funeral. I want to tell... a story about her. When we were kids growing up in NYC, we were taught to love the NYPD and FDNY. Especially after 9/11. Every year she’d take us to run Tunnel to Towers Foundation, where you run from Brooklyn through the tunnel to the World Trade Center just like FDNY hero Stephen Siller did on September 11. She’d stop to shake every cop’s hand she could. Three years ago she was diagnosed with brain cancer. The disease and the surgery shut down her body, making it hard for her to do anything. But she wanted to run the race, and I wasn’t going to tell her she shouldn’t. So we drove up to New York from DC to run it, and of course it’s pouring rain for the race. And even though she could barely walk, she ran. I took this video of her running across the finish line. Her whole right side was shut down, and it hurt like hell, but she ran. So we just signed up to run it again this year in her honor, and are raising money for Tunnel to Towers Foundation in her name as Team Melanie Cash. There’s no organization she’d rather support.
