That's Mariyappan Thangavelu. Just few hours back he won... India's 🇮🇳 first ever Gold Medal in High Jump at World Para Athletics. Media won't share stories of such incredible athletes. But should know more about him. At the age of 5, he met with an accident where a drunk bus driver ran over his right leg that permanently disabled his knee. His school physical education teacher encouraged him to try high jump and he excelled at it. Comes from a humble background, he was was raised by a single mother working as a daily wage labourer and vegetable seller to support the family. Despite this setback, he completed his schooling and earned a bachelor's degree in business administration. At the 2016 Rio Paralympics, he won the gold medal for India. In 2020 Tokyo Paralympics he could have won the gold again but the rains made the conditions difficand settled for a silver. He is a Padma Shri and Arjuna Award winner. And won the Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna award in 2020 which is India's highest sporting honor. He used all his prize money to buy a paddy field for his mother and built a better house for his family. Mariyappan believes that his right deformed big toe helps him to get the leap. “This is what gives me leverage when I jump,” he says. “It is my God.” India is a country of amazing sporting talent. He gave up playing chess and started a chess academy and named it Chess Gurukul. He also gave up his job in Indian Oil (IOCL) around the same point. Many told him that this was a dangerous decision. But Ramesh had 2 things going for him: 1. He loved coaching 2. His better half WGM Aarthie Ramaswamy was also ready to support him in this endeavour! With his immense chess knowledge, willingness to learn and ability to work extremely hard, Ramesh created the base for a real chess boom of Indian chess! Players like Praggnanandhaa, Vaishali, Aravindh Chithambaram, Karthikeyan Murali, Bharat Subramaniyam and many others grew up at his academy! There was a point when almost every single rising talent of Indian chess wanted to work with him. Today as Ramesh celebrates his 50th birthday, it is interesting to see the road he has travelled. His individual amateur titles include: Valderrama Boys Invitational Italian International U16 Championship Skania Junior Open Junior Orange Bowl Championship He grew up representing Norway and was frequently on the same national teams as Viktor Hovland. They won the 2014 Toyota Junior World Cup, a year after they finished runner-up at the European Boys Team Championship Reitan reached quarterfinals of the 2015 US Junior Amateur where Hovland was his caddie. He represented Team Europe at the 2016 Junior Ryder Cup and was one of only three visiting players to claim victory in the singles session. He was a professional footballer who played for Manchester United, Norwich City, and the Northern Ireland national team, earning 27 international caps. At the height of his career, he was reportedly earning around half a million pounds per year. After leaving football in 2008, he officially retired in 2009 and began formation for the Catholic priesthood. Mulryne later explained that football had given him privilege, comfort, and success, but not the peace he expected. He said he was shocked to realize that, even with the kind of life many young men desire, there was still a deep emptiness beneath it. That search led him back to the faith. In 2009, he entered Saint Malachy’s Seminary in Belfast. He studied philosophy at Queen’s University Belfast and theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. In 2012, he entered the Dominican Order. On July 8, 2017, Philip Mulryne was ordained a Catholic priest at St Saviour’s in Dublin. At his ordination, Archbishop Di Noia connected his life as an athlete to his priestly vocation, saying that his experience in football had helped prepare him for the priesthood because he already understood discipline, sacrifice, and working toward a goal. Now, that goal was Christ. Philip Mulryne left behind professional football, money, and public success to serve God as a priest. So on a warm Saturday in June , instead of a normal quiet day at home, they loaded the old Bernese into the back of the van and drove him two hours to the coast. Baxter had never seen the ocean. He was 13, and his whole life had been the backyard and the same worn spot on the living room rug. The kids wanted him to see something big before he went. He moved slow getting out of the van. His back legs weren't what they used to be, and the boys had to help him down onto the sand. For a second he just stood there at the top of the beach, nose up, taking in all that salt air and open water like he couldn't quite believe it. Then something in him shifted. He started down toward the surf on his own, stiff and determined, the way he used to trot to the door when the kids came home from school. When the first cold wave washed over his paws, his whole face lit up. He didn't run, he couldn't, but he waded in up to his chest and stood in the shallow water with the sun going down behind him, and the whole family just watched. Nobody said much. They didn't need to. They stayed until the light was almost gone, taking pictures, letting Baxter rest against their legs, giving him one perfect afternoon to hold onto. The vet was right about the time. Baxter left them a few weeks later, at home, surrounded by the people who loved him. But he saw the ocean first. His senior season was wiped out by COVID after only 5 games. The #Reds signed him in July 2020. He was the first baseball player to receive a professional offer since the US Department of Defense endorsed a policy to allow service academy athletes to pursue professional sports after graduation. There has only been one Army player ever to reach the Majors. Guy has had an unreal year. He doesn’t hit for much power and he’s already 25 so doesn’t get much “prospect” attention, but what he’s doing is pretty impressive. In 83 games at AA .306/.443/.492/.945 23 XBH In 19 games at AAA .447/.574/.553/1.127 3 XBH Guy is getting on base 57% of the time since he’s been to AAA. Will Ray (Wake Forest Baseball) was one of the... most dominant relievers on the Cape this summer. The former two-way showcased a high 80s - low 90s sinker from a sidearm slot with plenty of run and a sweeping slider that limited hitters to an average of 68.2 mph EV and a 0.59 xFIP (per Anthony Marotta as of 7/19). It's a plus pitch that was used more than the sinker and acts as his best offering. He also mixed in a splitter with some sink to get miss in and out of the zone. He appeared in 14 games for the Whitecaps on the Cape, limiting hard contact and base-runners with a 1.18 WHIP, 23 K/2 BB in 22 IP. Ray's stuff played well in the lower half of the zone but was susceptible to the long ball at times. Perhaps adding a four-seam FB that could get some chase at the top of the zone could help his overall profile. As of 7/23, Ray was 100th percentile in hard-hit % and 93rd percentile in opponent average exit speed (per Anthony Marotta). Ray made significant progress in his control and as a result, dropped his 4.9 BB/9 in 44 IP last spring to just 0.8 BB/9 in 22 IP this summer in the CCBL. He was able to make some of the top offensive college bats look foolish (Kurland - sinker, Burress - slider, Martinez - splitter; shown below).show more
