This is not a lion, it's a lioness! I... came across this video of a female lion who started growing manes. I then found many others too, like the five Botswana lionesses who started growing manes. On digging, I found some papers who reported elevated levels of cortisol and androstenedione. High androstenedione leads to high testosterone. High testosterone leads to more masculine behaviour. In fact, one of the lionesses observed started scent marking and roaring more than a female should. To crown it all, she was found mounting other females..... wàhálà 🤣🤣🤣 Even when they are mated by males, none of these mane-growing females was found to be pregnant or have a cub.
