This is GIFT City. But this post is about... Gurugram. Wide roads. Underground utility tunnels. District cooling. Automated waste collection. Green-certified buildings. More than 1,200 registered entities and $111 billion in banking assets. It is not Shanghai, Shenzhen or Dubai yet. But the direction is visible. Gujarat imagined a city that could compete with global financial centres. Then it started building the infrastructure required for that ambition. Now come to Gurugram. The city credited with contributing around 65% of Haryana’s revenue. Around 25% of the state’s GST collection comes from Gurugram. Last year, it contributed ₹3,875 crore from liquor-zone auctions alone. That was 27% of Haryana’s total. The Bristol Chowk licensing zone alone fetched nearly ₹100 crore. Mr Nayab Singh Saini, what exactly is Gurugram getting in return? Garbage is lying on roads across the city. Gurugram generates around 1,200 tonnes of waste every day. The waste collection system has survived on temporary arrangements since the main contract was terminated in June 2024. Nearly two years later, the city is still floating tenders and searching for a permanent solution. Then come the roads. An MCG survey found more than 2,000 potholes across eight zones. One division alone had 600. Only 387 had been repaired when those numbers were reported. By February 2026, MCG had to announce another drive targeting 5,000 potholes in ten days. We do not have a road-maintenance system. We have pothole-filling announcements after every round of public outrage. Then it rains. In July 2025, 133 mm of overnight rain brought Gurugram to a standstill. Subhash Chowk had around 2.5 feet of water. People remained stuck in traffic until 2 AM. Open manholes disappear under rainwater. Potholes become invisible. Roads turn into accident traps. Then the electricity goes. A resident of DLF Phase 1 reported an eight-hour power cut after a five-minute drizzle. In May 2026, a fault at the Sector 72 substation disrupted eight substations and even affected Rapid Metro operations. This is happening in one of the most expensive corporate and residential districts in India. And money is not the problem. MCG spent ₹1,282 crore out of its ₹1,497 crore expenditure budget by January 2026. But only ₹85 crore had gone towards road construction and ₹240 crore towards sanitation and waste management. So the problem is worse than merely having an unspent budget. Money is being spent. Residents simply cannot see the outcome on the roads outside their homes. We are not asking Haryana to build another GIFT City tomorrow. We are asking for three things. Roads that remain usable after rain. Electricity that does not disappear with the first storm. Garbage that gets collected before every vacant plot becomes a dumping ground. These are not luxury demands. These are the most basic functions of a government. Property prices in Gurugram have reached global-city levels. People are paying ₹5 crore, ₹8 crore and ₹10 crore for apartments. But outside the gates, the roads, drains and electricity systems still feel like they belong to another decade. Gujarat looked at an empty piece of land and imagined a global city. Haryana already has one of India’s strongest economic cities. It does not need to imagine it. It only needs to stop neglecting it. Fix the roads. Fix the power. Pick up the garbage. Residents and commuters have since endured weeks of severe dust pollution, followed by the onset of the monsoon, with potholes, an uneven surface and water accumulation creating entirely foreseeable road safety risks. This follows an entire month of dust pollution during the median works in April. Residents have now been subjected to months of avoidable hardship due to poor planning and execution. The question is simple: Why was a usable road stripped when there was no realistic plan to restore it before the monsoon? This was an MCG public works project executed at the ward level. Who is accountable for this planning failure? What message does this send about compliance with CAQM’s dust-control directions and the responsibility owed to citizens? Honestly this does touch on our philosophy. We could... very easily chase profits and charge $50 because it's entirely made in USA, the quality of the cotton and weave, the printing method, the inks we use etc. Obviously yall see others doing it for even lower quality products. Our pricing is not reflective of the product but we do it to keep it affordable and accessible and to help grow the mission of reshoring industry. A lot of people are trying to be made in USA businesses but also charge out the absolute ass trying to maintain margins and an income they'd grown accustomed to. It's an unrealistic expectation in our current economy and you're shooting the movement in the foot pricing yourself out of volume. Made in USA needs volume and cashflow. Goods need to be moving and exchanging hands, that's what drives the economy. If you're out there charging a premium people will still continue to go buy the foreign slop because it's cheaper and they don't share the values of what supporting made in USA really is. Shirts specifically if you're still using foreign shirts and cotton, they use the absolute cheapest shit they can find. (Just like wool, there's varying degrees of quality genetics that determines softness and performance). Probably the most frequent comment we get is about softness and how crazy comfortable our stuff is. That's for a reason and not by magic or accident. Our designs don't have that gross plastic stiff feel to them that flakes off and degrades quickly. That's for a reason because of how we choose to do things the hard way. We understand we care more about these things than most and for the general public they willingly buy lower quality stuff more to just support who is selling it. But I think awareness is also part of the issue because I was also one of those "it's just a shirt, who cares" people until I wore an AL shirt. They are hands down the biggest bang for the buck in this space and we have shirts lasting people years and years now for the same price you pay to fund china whether directly or indirectly. The best (and how capitalism is supposed to work) way to grow the movement is to be an educated consumer. Check tags, country of origin labels, ink and printing method. If someone is being shady or dodgy over the answers? There's your answer. And this goes for all products. Yet the Ethiopian city still parades its fair share of slums, neglected districts, and street beggars. I make this point because you obviously have never been there and have relied on a single image of a country that, just 25 years ago, was the third-poorest country in the world, to mock your nation’s capital. And that even revealed a rather narrow idea of what a city should look like. A city is not measured by the presence of tall, shiny buildings. Skyscrapers are not a universal marker of urban success, nor should they be a priority for Abuja. They are largely a response to population density and land scarcity. We think Abuja suffers from these because we have not had an FCT minister with city-planning skills in a long time. Land is not a scarce commodity here. What the city needs is functional infrastructure that allows for orderly expansion and eases demographic pressure on its existing districts, not vertical congestion for its own sake. The irony is that most of the shiny edifices you now see in Addis Ababa, including that green roundabout you think is the hallmark of a modern city (as if we don’t have Unity Fountain in Wuse 2, or a roundabout with a basketball court in Life Camp, and a demolished one with a football pitch also in Life Camp), were built within the last five years. The Addis Ababa I met less than ten years ago could easily be compared to a city like Kaduna, which tells you how much can change within the span of a single term. Nigeria, after all, is one of the few African countries that can boast of more than 50 urban centres capable of absorbing growth if hold our governors to account. It is also worth noting that some of the world’s most admired cities are not defined by skyscrapers. Cities like Paris and Rome have few to no high-rise buildings, and so does America’s Abuja, Washington, D.C. Yet they rank among the most functional and liveable cities in the world. By contrast, cities like New York and Singapore build vertically because land is a serious constraint. Even Oman, an oil-rich country, has developed without an obsession for shiny skyscrapers. Why Hyderabad Drowns After A 20min Rain? I may... not have a simple answer to this complex question but was in Raidurgam area yesterday and this what I saw. This is right next to the Raidurgam metro. It is like the IT hub of Hyderabad and look at the state of things here. Roads are being dug to lay drainage pipes. Locals told me it has been close to a year since they started digging. The debris is just lying on the road, existing drainage seems to be damaged and all the sewer is flowing on to the main road. To make things worse, many are parking right on the road making the congested area much more difficult to commute. There is no parking space at Raidurgam Metro. If someone wants to take the metro, they have to arrive on a separate vehicle to reach. Plus there are a million autos lined up on the road. Traffic police who hide behind trees or corner you in some random street won’t regulate traffic on the main roads. They won’t show a solution to park vehicles but will collect challans. Why are you collecting challans without any space being earmarked for parking? Do you expect people to jump off a parachute and get into a metro? We look at China, Japan with their advanced technology of laying roads in a day and will be wowed. Here governments talk about AI city, Future City and such money minting projects for the government and still get wowed. Why isn’t AI or advanced technology being used to repair roads, drainages or maintain infrastructure in the existing city??? Every event and encounter is accounted for, studied and eventually every loss is turned into a win. In Vietnam era terminology it's called winning hearts and minds. The majority of humans, by their core nature, are unwilling to attack a friendly face. Furthermore, when they connect with someone, genuinely, they are unlikely to betray them most of the time. Stack these events and the likelihood of immersion with the locals becomes high. Then you facilitate your strategic objectives, without any interference from the locals, because they're already on your side. What you don't do is a road-side execution, fit for a terror organisation. This doesn't just lose you the locals but creates an environment where people around the world want to actively see you harmed, or lose. Every local you kill has hundreds of friends and potentially thousands of associations. Do this enough times and the entire city will want to hunt you down.
