A developing early-season Nor'easter will bring a prolonged period... of strong winds, coastal flooding, and rain from New York City to Boston this Friday into the weekend! A developing coastal storm is forecast to track up the Eastern Seaboard and stall off the Northeast coast, delivering a prolonged period of wet and windy weather from Friday through Sunday. Wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph will be possible along the coast, particularly from the New York City area up through Boston. Even stronger wind gusts exceeding 40 mph are possible over Cape Cod and the islands! The storm will also generate significant marine hazards, starting with a high risk of rip currents and building surf ahead of the system through the middle of the week. By Friday and Saturday, persistent northeast winds combined with high astronomical tides from a full moon will pile water along the shoreline. This combination will likely result in multiple cycles of minor coastal flooding and significant beach erosion, with eastern-facing beaches at the greatest risk. While exact rainfall totals will depend on how close the center of the storm tracks to the coast, the heaviest rain is currently favored over eastern Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and eastern Long Island. These areas could see up to 3-5 inches of rain through Saturday night, though widespread freshwater flooding is not currently a major concern.show more

The tropical disturbance is currently located over Mexico and will gradually move toward South Texas. According to the NHC/NOAA, the chance that it will organize into a tropical cyclone remains low, around 30%. Regardless of whether a tropical cyclone actually forms, the system may bring intense showers and thunderstorms along the western and central Gulf Coast. Over the next four days, widespread rainfall totals of 4 to 6 inches are expected from the Texas coast into Louisiana, with locally higher amounts possible.
