Iran agreed on that basis. Then Netanyahu called Trump minutes before the announcement and got him to agree Lebanon was excluded. The White House never clarified publicly until it was too late. Vance called it a "legitimate misunderstanding." That's a generous way of describing what happened. Iran entered a ceasefire believing Lebanon was included. Israel entered knowing it wasn't. Someone either miscommunicated or deliberately let Iran sign a deal under false assumptions. The result: Israel launched its largest strike on Lebanon since the war began. Iran is now threatening to withdraw from Saturday's talks and close Hormuz again. Araghchi put it plainly: "The U.S. must choose. Ceasefire or continued war via Israel. It cannot have both." JD Vance’s framing makes no sense. The stated reason... for this conflict was stopping Iran from getting a nuclear weapon ; not lowering gas prices. Gas was not the crisis before the war. Now Vance says cheap oil and gas is Goal #1, while preventing a nuclear Iran is Goal #2. So the war creates an energy problem, and suddenly fixing that problem becomes the main mission? Someone needs to tell JD Vance: this is a complete failure of messaging and strategy. Maybe if JD Vance spent less time portraying Iranian negotiators as reasonable partners for endless talks, and more time understanding how his own words undermine the stated purpose of this conflict, he would not have turned the administration’s message into such a complete strategic mess.
