There is a rule in Florence that has not... been broken in over five hundred years: nothing in the city may be built taller than a dome finished in 1436. The dome belongs to the cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, and it is the work of Filippo Brunelleschi. When you look at a photograph of Florence and notice that its skyline seems strangely, impossibly intact, you are not imagining it... The city has protected that view, by custom and by law, since the Renaissance. To this day, no building in Florence is permitted to rise higher than the cupola. What it guards is one of the most astonishing structures ever built. When Brunelleschi began in 1420, no one in Europe knew how to raise a dome that wide. The technology had been lost with the Romans. The cathedral had stood for decades with a hole in its roof, because the span was considered impossible to cover, and the city had essentially gambled that someone would one day work out how. Brunelleschi built it without the wooden scaffolding everyone assumed was necessary, laying over four million bricks in a self-supporting double shell, one dome inside another, in a herringbone pattern that let each ring hold itself up as it rose. Six centuries later, it remains the largest masonry dome in the world. Nothing built since, in brick and stone, has surpassed it. The Italian director Franco Zeffirelli, who was born in Florence, once explained what that means to him. "When I feel depression creeping in," he said, "I return to Florence to gaze at Brunelleschi's dome. If human genius was able to achieve something so great, then I too can and must try to create, to act, to live." That is what a skyline can be when a city decides that beauty is worth protecting... From a distance, this figure seems to be wearing... a robe draped over his shoulders. Step closer, and you realize it is not a robe. It's his own skin... This is the statue of Saint Bartholomew, carved in 1562 by the Lombard sculptor Marco d'Agrate, and it stands inside the Duomo of Milan. Bartholomew was one of the twelve apostles of Christ, and according to tradition he was martyred in the cruelest way imaginable: he was flayed alive, his skin stripped from his body, and then beheaded. D'Agrate chose to show him not in the moment of agony, but afterward, standing upright in defiance, his own flayed skin wrapped around him like a garment. What makes the sculpture extraordinary is the precision beneath that skin: every muscle, every tendon, every vein and cord of the human body is exposed and rendered with such accuracy that anatomists have studied it. This was the Renaissance at its most fearless, when the same curiosity that drove artists to dissect the human body in secret produced an image of a man turned inside out, his suffering transformed into a study of how a human being is actually made. And the sculptor knew exactly how remarkable his achievement was. At the base of the statue he carved a line in Latin that has outlived him by nearly five centuries: Non me Praxiteles, sed Marcus finxit Agrates. "I was not made by Praxiteles, but by Marco d'Agrate." He was comparing himself to the greatest sculptor of ancient Greece, and daring you to disagree... It is possible that the word “craft” is already imposing too familiar a category on something far less conventional. What if these objects are not always composed of a material in any sense we would normally recognize? What if the hull is not an assembled exterior, but something closer to a materialized field condition: a stable interface between energy, geometry, and matter? A human aircraft is built from parts. Wings, alloys, rivets, electronics, engines. Its structure is mechanical, sectional, and industrial. But a sufficiently advanced non-human vehicle may not be “built” in that sense at all. What if it is "cohered"? Its surface might function less like armor and more like a programmable boundary layer: a physical skin capable of altering its optical, thermal, electromagnetic, and inertial behavior in real time. In that case, we may be looking at something that only resembles a machine because the human mind has no better category available. I go to Simply Wholesome in LA somewhat regularly.... Yesterday, it was on SMASH. Parking lot was full. The patio was also practically full. I asked the server about the crowd and she said the majority of folks were there as part of the economic boycott. Simply Wholesome is a Black-owned Carribean restaurant and health food store that is a LA staple. Seeing this yesterday was pretty inspiring. It shows that people care and are prepared to fight.
